ok, are these birds real? someone sent it to me and I can't tell for sure. kind of looks fake. The faces do, but the wet feathers look real. And where are the feet? Chickens don't float? ** Edited** none of their mouths are open. mine would be Bakking up a storm

Quote: Me too...but they are bad here right now. I haven;t ever had them go after my chickens though. We have been hearing them in the walls lately. We had a pest control service for a while, but ail they would do was put out bait stations. I have had better luck with the battery operated traps that zap them. I can only find them at Lowe's now because, apparently someone complained to Home Depot that they were "cruel". OK...how is it crueler to kill them instantly that to poison them and have them die a long, painful death? Frankly...I would rathr be zapped if I were a rat. Besides, when you poison them they can still reproduce and cause damage before they die and there is risk of a family pet getting a hold of the carcass and ingesting the poison too...

I need enablers. That's why I decided to post on this thread!

I have a 'limit' on what I can have since I live in the city. I can only have "three" hens. You'll notice that I use quotations in that, LOL. I think ideally I'll end up with maybe 5 and I wouldn't mind a nice mix. I'd like a mix of egg colors too, I think. Most important for me though is that they are good with the kids, since my kids are all so little. I realize that that's like generalizing dogs by breed, but you know, :)
Hi! We love Grass Valley. Before we had kids we used to go up there every year and go to the river to swim. :) And we would always stop at the best Greek restaurant when we were there! Since then I've had such little children that I don't feel comfy taking them to the river yet, so we haven't been. We were just talking about that the other day, actually. :)

We are very good at chicken math here!

They will float but not very long. They will get water logged and sink.

The picture could be real.

Welcome to all the newcomers to the thread! It's exciting to see new people posting!

We all probably have our own opinion on which breeds are friendly! I have an eclectic layer flock because I wasn't sure which ones that I would like. Our first year, we just bought hatchery birds from the feed store. The most outgoing of the hatchery girls were the barred rocks and the speckled sussex. They aren't flighty once they are grown because they are wider bodied birds. I love my Langshans and they are my top breed. They are big so not flighty, mellow in personality, friendly but not super in your face all the time kind of friendly. The two friendliest breeds that I currently have are Wellsummers and Pita Pintas. Wellies lay beautiful terra cotta colored eggs and are not big birds so don't eat as much. Mine were a little flighty when young but at a year they have outgrown their high flying habits. All of the Ameraucanas, EE's and Cream Legbars that I have had are flightly and not very friendly. But their eggs are beautiful!

I'm sure this is very true. That's interesting about the wider-bodied birds being less flighty, I hadn't thought about that! Also interesting about your EE's, it seems like everyone I know that has them thinks they are the friendliest of their bunches. I honestly don't know much about the legbars, I've just started looking into them. I do love that I would KNOW whether I had girls or not, I figure with my luck I'll pick out 10 chicks and 9 of them will be boys.

That's another problem that I have, I'm worried about what to do with the boys since I absolutely cannot keep them. I thought maybe I'd have a better chance at giving them to 4h kids or something if I got some nice bloodlines... do you all think that's true? I get so attached to things... which is why we have a horribly mean rabbit that is 7 years old. I can't bear the thought of something happening to her, so here she still sits.

RoseVille has a small animal auction--They take cockerels there.

I need help withy new genesis. I filled the suggested area, which is highlighted in the pic. I got like 55% humidity.
Emptied that, dried it. Then filled that square right in the middle for 30%. Just add some to one of the rectangles next to it, but I'm thinking that may be too high. Any help would be greatly appreciated . Could those with this tell me what they fill up?
My Genesis is almost a year old now. I had borrowed incubators the year before so this will be my 3rd year of hatching. Last year, I obsessed over the humidity with every hatch. I fiddled around with which section/sections to fill on the tray. I bought different hygrometers/thermometers to check my incubator for accuracy. I panicked if the humidity went above 50 or below 35 during the first 18 days. My hatches ended being okay but not terrific. This year when I brought out my incubator for hatching, I decided to not be so OCD about it all. I've been filling the number 1 outside section on the tray with the beginning humidity of 50-54% then adding more water when the humidity drops below 40% to keep it around 45%. Then on day 18 when I set the eggs for hatch, I fill up section 1 and fill section 2 and the humidity stays at around 60% until hatching starts. I have a length of clear aquarium tubing that I insert through the top vent hole and through the screen into section 1 on days 1-18 and into section 2 on days 18-22. I use a basting syringe to add water through the tube. My hatches this year have been so much better than last year! My last one, I set 23 eggs. I ended up with 20 chicks that hatched, 2 that fully formed but did not hatch, and 1 that shouldn't have made it into lock down because it was just yolk or an early quitter. I am very pleased with the results and I'm glad to have a more relaxed experience. I'm sure if I was setting expensive, shipped eggs, I might be a little more uptight about it. And maybe the breeds that I am hatching like the higher humidity or are just stronger breeds? Almost all the eggs that I have been hatching are from my Langshan roos or my Pita Pinta roo.

NICE! Good doggie.
I feel bad (briefly) for them but I know that once they find your flock, they know where to go & then they bring buddies. Ewww.
I pushed a possum off the fence into our neighbor's yard - they have a pit bull that barks & barks & barks when something's around - I was desperate to get some sleep.
Everything was quiet after that but I wonder what kind of mess my neighbor had. <sheepish>

He's been getting less useful in his old age. He tends to just bark at them now, but he did get one about a month ago. :) We have a 'pit' too (she's actually a Staffy/lab mix, but looks pretty pitt-ish) but she's all talk. My shepherd mix is actually pretty good at killing them too, but she's on the small side so she can't reach the top of the fence. Sometimes she and the Akbash will tag-team them though... he'll knock them off the fence and she'll grab them when they fall. I find joy in the little things...

When I first joined BYC, someone posted pics of their chickens swimming with their daughters. I think that the chickens were buff orpingtons. It was adorable! Does anyone else remember seeing this post?
