Hi everyone! I'm new to the forum and new to chickens, but thought I would say hello since this thread is 'my' local thread and you all are so fun and chatty.

The greatest bunch of chicken enablers ever to grace a forum. What kind did you say you wanted? Big fluffy red ones or itty bitty speckled ones? Blue eggs, green eggs, white eggs, brown and chocolate too, we will show them all to you!

Right now I kind of have my eyes set on BBS orpingtons, creme legbars, and maybe some plain old EE's. I'd like something that isn't too flighty and is friendly, since I have small children. Any recommendations?

We all probably have our own opinion on which breeds are friendly! I have an eclectic layer flock because I wasn't sure which ones that I would like. Our first year, we just bought hatchery birds from the feed store. The most outgoing of the hatchery girls were the barred rocks and the speckled sussex. They aren't flighty once they are grown because they are wider bodied birds. I love my Langshans and they are my top breed. They are big so not flighty, mellow in personality, friendly but not super in your face all the time kind of friendly. The two friendliest breeds that I currently have are Wellsummers and Pita Pintas. Wellies lay beautiful terra cotta colored eggs and are not big birds so don't eat as much. Mine were a little flighty when young but at a year they have outgrown their high flying habits. All of the Ameraucanas, EE's and Cream Legbars that I have had are flightly and not very friendly. But their eggs are beautiful!

Thought I should say "hi" & re-introduce myself. I joined sometime ago & been mainly lurking.
My name is Lisa & I'm a chicken-a-holic.
Got my first pullet 16 years ago (a banty silver duckwing OEGB) & was complete hooked. Now I have 30+ in my motley flock.
I found that I most prefer to hatch eggs (so I can talk to them in the shell) then to grow out the peepers, picking out my favorite personality, then passing the rest on to create new addicts.
You all are such a wonderful source of information & support. I don't feel so "off in left field" when I get chance to visit the website.

I hate rats. One of my dogs (an Akbash/border collie mix, he's very tall like an Akbash) will jump up and snatch them off the fence when he can get to them. I always feel a sick sense of pride when that happens.

NICE! Good doggie.
I feel bad (briefly) for them but I know that once they find your flock, they know where to go & then they bring buddies. Ewww.
I pushed a possum off the fence into our neighbor's yard - they have a pit bull that barks & barks & barks when something's around - I was desperate to get some sleep.
Everything was quiet after that but I wonder what kind of mess my neighbor had. <sheepish>

Absolutely true!

I was a bit tardy collecting eggs on Sunday and was reaching in under a pullet sitting in the nest box to get the eggs. She did not complain at all and I finally realized that the pullet was my Black Penedesenca! She is getting to be quite tame(for a Penedesenca).

A person at work wanted chickens for his Daughter. They took two Pita Pinta pullets and one Marraduna Basque hen pullet. He noticed a huge difference between the two breeds. Pita Pintas are calm, quiet and very friendly. The Basque hen is noisier and not as friendly.

Seriously, other than silkies, nothing has been friendlier than the Pita Pintas.

I need enablers. That's why I decided to post on this thread!

I have a 'limit' on what I can have since I live in the city. I can only have "three" hens. You'll notice that I use quotations in that, LOL. I think ideally I'll end up with maybe 5 and I wouldn't mind a nice mix. I'd like a mix of egg colors too, I think. Most important for me though is that they are good with the kids, since my kids are all so little. I realize that that's like generalizing dogs by breed, but you know,

Hi! We love Grass Valley. Before we had kids we used to go up there every year and go to the river to swim. And we would always stop at the best Greek restaurant when we were there! Since then I've had such little children that I don't feel comfy taking them to the river yet, so we haven't been. We were just talking about that the other day, actually.
