May all your hatches be great!

Love them!!!! I wonder how many black and white chicken breeds that I could collect?!!!
I tried Mottled Javas for awhile. Very pretty because of the black & white contrast. They looked like my splash AMs but instead of light & dark blues they were stark black with white spots. I was disappointed at first but after their year molt they looked great.

I need help withy new genesis. I filled the suggested area, which is highlighted in the pic. I got like 55% humidity.
Emptied that, dried it. Then filled that square right in the middle for 30%. Just add some to one of the rectangles next to it, but I'm thinking that may be too high. Any help would be greatly appreciated . Could those with this tell me what they fill up?
My husband drilled little holes & put small black irrigation hoses in to each tray & I fell them with a syringe when needed & just watch the hygrometer for the reading. I rarely open the incubator that way.

Hi everyone! I'm new to the forum and new to chickens, but thought I would say hello since this thread is 'my' local thread and you all are so fun and chatty. :)
Welcome,
Where are you & what chickens are you hoping to collect?

To the Thread!

Do you have chickens yet?

No, no chickens yet unfortunately. I realize that I'm jumping the gun a little by posting here, but you are all so knowledgeable that I've been reading like crazy. We are going to get our property all set up and secured first, so it will probably be a little while until we're ready. I also want to wait until my 4 month old is a little older, since I'll have more access to my hands at that point, haha. :)

I have been stalking juststruttin's orpingtons though on her website......

Thought I should say "hi" & re-introduce myself. I joined sometime ago & been mainly lurking.
My name is Lisa & I'm a chicken-a-holic. :)
Got my first pullet 16 years ago (a banty silver duckwing OEGB) & was complete hooked. Now I have 30+ in my motley flock.
I found that I most prefer to hatch eggs (so I can talk to them in the shell) then to grow out the peepers, picking out my favorite personality, then passing the rest on to create new addicts.
You all are such a wonderful source of information & support. I don't feel so "off in left field" when I get chance to visit the website.
Thanks!

Thank you so much! :)

I'm in Sacramento. :) I'm not 1100% sure yet. I'm pretty sure that chicken math is going to affect my life in a huge way, though. We seem to start with one of something and then it multiplies... like dogs, cats, kids... :P

Right now I kind of have my eyes set on BBS orpingtons, creme legbars, and maybe some plain old EE's. I'd like something that isn't too flighty and is friendly, since I have small children. Any recommendations? :)

Welcome! This is a wonderful forum with lots of very knowledgeable people on it! It's a great place to start!
Thanks so much!!!

You are smart to do your research first. Then you can get things set up right from the get-go and not kick yourself later for not building a bigger coop......

Ha! Yes, that's definitely one reason. We don't have much of a predator problem here, just the normal city stuff like raccoons and some hawks, but we do have a bad rat problem in my neighborhood.

Many of us have fruit trees so those little buggers just love it here. We are going to completely secure and fence in half of our yard for the 'run' area, including along the bottom of the fence, so that we can hopefully keep the rats out. So gross and I hate that I have to deal with them but it is what it is. And we'll build the coop too.
