California - Northern

These Orp chicks are making me crazy!! Maybe I'm just not meant to have any Orps. So I only got 3/8 to hatch. Then I had the one with the freakish leg that I had to cull. #2 is the one that tried to hatch foot first, and has curled toes (and wears the little shoes), Now: I go to check on the chick after getting home from work, and #3 is laying upside down in the water dish. I thought it was dead -it looked dead. So I reached in and picked it up. When I saw that it was breathing (barely) I put it under my shirt (in my arm-pit -- it was the warmest place I could think of at the time) and went in the house to figure out what to do. While I was walking around it started peeping. So I put a clean stoneware pan in the (oven to heat it up), and got some canning jars and put hot water in them. Now she seem just fine (just a little tired), and is sitting in a warm pan, cuddled up with jars on the book shelf.

Tell me more about the Orp hatch?

It could be poor genetics and if so the best thing to do is to find a new Rooster. The new genetics may well fix it all.

So other breeds hatch fine for you?

I can be very stubborn. It took me a lot of hatches to get Penedesencas.

When I checked on the hatch this afternoon, 7 more had hatched. One more is working on hatching. They will leave 4 that did not hatch out of 44 set. That is 40 chicks!

All of The OEs that I moved to the hatcher hatched!

Wow...that is amazing! You are definitley the Hatching King!
