Well I am bummed. I have shingles. Its rather horrible. I'm stuck at home wishing I could rip part of my face off. Yes it's that bad. I'm only 36 and a nursing mother so it took a while before they diagnosed (too young for shingles) and then I can't have the antiviral (nursing) so I'm stuck miserable.

What kills me is that I'm bored and my incubator doesn't work. I can't even shop for eggs. Shopping for eggs is so much fun! There you have it. I have shingles and I'm mad that I can't shop for eggs.

No, and I'm not sold on the shots myself. My children all had the chicken pox. A school mate of theirs went and got all her shots, broke out in chicken pox and GAVE IT to all the kids at school. Well, almost all of them. Some had already had them and a few who had the shots didn't get them. Several in that school who'd had the shots got them anyway. Small school of less than 50 students so all the parents knew each other and went. HUNH

The only benefit of getting the shots that I can see is that IF you avoid the CP, then you can avoid the shingles. That's looking pretty good to me right now!

Still, I think it's funny that I'm mad I can't shop for eggs. I must have a bit of an addiction.

Oh man...that really sucks! My mom had the a several years back and I am at high risk because of my autoimmune problems so I was able to get the vaccine covered by my insurance. Are you able to continue nursing?

I don't think they know for sure that the chicken pox shot will stop shingles. I bet it will not stop them.

Yes I am, thank goodness! That would be entirely too traumatizing otherwise. Baby gets a TINY bit of the steriods I'm on for the inflammation. They say she gets less than 1%. While that isn't ideal, perhaps it will help with her teething

Hi all,

I've come here hoping for advice from all of you.

I have an OEGB hen who has a white eye. I hadn't noticed it until today. I took her out of the breeding pen and she's inside now. We have this "terramycin" ointment that we use for pink eye in our sheep, goats and occasionally dog, and I put some of that on her eye. It always clears up our livestock's eyes. But I've never seen this before in a chicken. Her pupil is white, and the iris is more of a murky shade of white and her whole eye is swollen.

Heard of this before? Any advice?

Could another bird have pecked her and essentially killed the eye? I have seen the milky white eye cause by that in other animals. I also had a cat that came from a litter of immune compromised kittens that was dumped on the back porch of the Vet Hospital I worked at. They whole litter was the size of 6 week olds but they were actually at least 6 months (all had all of their permanent teeth). They were adopted out mostly to employees and every one of them has some kind if issue. Some skin, some oral, some eyes. About once or twice a year mine would begin to get a milky looking spot on one eye. If we didn't notice it right away it would get quite large. We would use the terramycin ophthalmic ointment twice a day for about 10 days and it would clear up.
