I have my chicks out in a barn, with a heat lamp, and they have been fine. They were even ok during the day, when the power went out.I want to set up the brooder in the garage, but it gets really cold outside at night, and I'm afraid the garage would be too cold for them, even with a heat lamp. Of course, by the time I get them it will be the first or second week of April. Should they be fine to have their brooder in the garage by then? How do I make sure they stay warm enough at night?
Also, what size brooder do I need for 7 chicks? Been about a year since I've brooded babies![]()
Ron uses plastic storage bins as small brooders. I have used veggie totes & small stock tanks. For only 7 chicks there are lots of options.
The plastic bins work well. I use them indoors and have also moved them outside into the floor area of one of my outside aviaries. You could also set them up on something insulating (like wood or newspaper) so the cold from the concrete floor in the garage isn't a factor.
