I want to set up the brooder in the garage, but it gets really cold outside at night, and I'm afraid the garage would be too cold for them, even with a heat lamp. Of course, by the time I get them it will be the first or second week of April. Should they be fine to have their brooder in the garage by then? How do I make sure they stay warm enough at night?
Also, what size brooder do I need for 7 chicks? Been about a year since I've brooded babies :)
I have my chicks out in a barn, with a heat lamp, and they have been fine. They were even ok during the day, when the power went out.
Ron uses plastic storage bins as small brooders. I have used veggie totes & small stock tanks. For only 7 chicks there are lots of options.
The plastic bins work well. I use them indoors and have also moved them outside into the floor area of one of my outside aviaries. You could also set them up on something insulating (like wood or newspaper) so the cold from the concrete floor in the garage isn't a factor.

I can't take it. I'm going to upgrade my daughters phone and take a break . Is 65 ok for fcbm in lockdown?

Chiquitta if u have the room get some guinea fowl they will keep everything away foxes, bobcats, etc

I have a guinea. But he thinks he is a marans and does not keep squat away. Loud too!

Could guineafowl live together with Chikens?

If they are not territorial. They are attacking bullies if they are.

Well I am bummed.  I have shingles.  Its rather horrible.  I'm stuck at home wishing I could rip part of my face off.  Yes it's that bad.  I'm only 36 and a nursing mother so it took a while before they diagnosed (too young for shingles) and then I can't have the antiviral (nursing) so I'm stuck miserable.

What kills me is that I'm bored and my incubator doesn't work.  I can't even shop for eggs.  Shopping for eggs is so much fun!  There you have it.  I have shingles and I'm mad that I can't shop for eggs.

Omg that sucks!!

Thank you for the oil tips.  I do use them (oils).  In fact, I think that is why it was so slow coming on.  I thought I had a big spider bite and was treating it topically with Melaleuca alternated with immupower.  When the lymph glands started to swell, I treated them.  They are still not as big as typically seen on a full-fledged shingles outbreak.  Yes, I'll admit it.  I was under too much stress lately - for the last 6 months solid - from outside sources.  Severely ill/dying grandparents, in house company (both sides of the family) for over a month solid, starting a new business, you name it - we've had it!  Stress hasn't abated yet.  Hoping for a break soon!  My husband has been out of town working every week for several weeks.  No other family help so I'm on my own (I simply can NOT imagine how wives of service-men cope).  He did come home last night for a few hours and left again this morning.  We are hoping that this Friday is his last out of town day for a couple weeks.  Having him around will reduce my work load significantly!  That alone will help me rest and heal.

I love it when pwople combine ancient and modern technology!

My guineas are a crackup. I have 10 that free range with my layer pen. They let me know when anything is amiss, out of place or scary (planes flying overhead, empty feeder, sun going down... ) Our poor relief UPS driver is terrified of them, won't get out of his truck. They chase it down the drive :)

True...as least there may be a bit of a silver lining. I don't think they offered steroids to my Mom when she got them. She was in her late 70's and diabetic, so those may have been factors. The bad thing is that even if you get them you can still get them again from what I understand. And even the vaccine is not 100%

I have a friend who gets them over and over again. She wants to get the shot but she told me she has to have no shingles for a few weeks straight before they will give it to her. Poor thing!
