California - Northern

Ok that explains some of the hemming & hawing I get. I am so done with hatcheries. I'd much rather people tell me they don't know than tell me what they think I want to hear.
It helps to know what color the eggs are hatching from. If a TRUE Ameraucana breeder knows his/her stock, there will be no brown egg surprises. Blue egg layers bred with blue eggs laying (genetic) roosters, will produce blue egg layers. However, GREEN is a different story. If there are green eggs in the mix then yes, brown eggs can pop up. Especially in some of the wheaten varieties as they used Salmon Favarolles to create that color. So sometimes feathered legs and/or brown eggs can pop out. Again, a breeder should know their stuff. Ask good questions, it will help you get what you want.

All that said, if you are only after blue - turquoise or green tint eggs - then there is a hatchery that consistently sells such egg layers. Murray McMurray has suppliers that do a good job with their blue egg laying EE's. All my blue egg layers (in the breakfast makers house) are from there. My avatar shows some of the blue eggs.

Wow - WAAAAY behind!

I saw some extremely kind posts and had to leave the computer and then lost them. Lets see if I can tag people on BYC -

Sewngrow, you are so kind to offer to help - and the use of your extra incubators - a totally lovely idea! Thank you for that. Yes, having my husband gone was probably the hardest part of all. We are blessed that he is working near home Monday and Tuesday. Then its another out of town marathon. This is not a normal aspect of his work and hopefully once the job is done, it is done!

Wendyjeepchick (okay these names are not linking - how do I do this?) You also offered to help. Wow! I am just floored at the kindness of people. Thank you for such generosity!

I think I saw a couple other offers but I was tired and couldn't go back to find them. Please know that your kindness rather restores ones faith in humanity. What a lovely bunch of people!

My church family figured out I was sick and we have been blessed with groceries. Thank goodness for that! My children were tired of eating whatever they could fix. One night my 9 year old made pumpkin pudding (pie with extra eggs and no crust). They ate an entire 9 x 13 for supper. I was happy. Eggs are good.

I am (hopefully) on the mend! Watching my eye closely but it looks like there may not be any lasting damage. The shingles attacking my eye rather worried me! But its looking good now! I may even be able to attend the chicken show Sunday for an hour or so if I feel like getting dressed.

So glad that you are feeling better!!!

I have a question about sprouted grains and can't find the answer myself.

Why can't I sew the seeds in the pasture among the bermuda and other grasses. Our soil is sandy and the grass is not dense; so the sprouts will be well drained and the bermuda won't choke out other plants.

When I'm researching the subject, everyone is going to alot of trouble rinsing transferring etc. I understand why that is necessary for
Supplementing in coops by giving them a tray
Of sprouted grains. But what about chickens that free range all day?

Eggs and Pumpkin and Milk....sounds like the perfect dinner! Back in the day Tom was a referee for HS fb and bb. This took him away friday nights from Sept-the end of March. That was when we would have MYODN pronounced MY Odd En...or Make your own dinner night. The kids loved it they had cereal or sanwiches when they were little and graduated to soup and pasta when they were older.

So glad you are on the mend!

Quote: I have one that regularly lays shelless ones. Sometimes its there first thing in the morning, sometimes late in the afternoon. Usually I find it already broken and nothing left but the membrane when I go out to feed. She is the one I keep saying I'm going to make a freezer bird. I am still trying to work up the nerve. I think I should get some meat bird chicks and start with them. They would be easier to avoid attachment too.

So glad you are feeling better! I have been thinking about you and your shingles. There are definitley some very kind and helpful people here. And having a great Church Family definitley helps too! Hope you are able to make it to the show!

Someone probably told you by now that you have the put the "@" in front of thier screenname to link it.

The Mottled is doing very well. It seems a little smaller than the others, but keeps up just fine! I am anxious about it revealing it's sex though. Not sure how long it will be before I can tell with it. I don't remember if I mentioned that I finally heard back on getting more eggs. She said to check with her in about a month because she has a long list, but it sounds like I may be able to get more eggs before too long!
