I don't think they are free. The website says there is an adoption fee.

Edited to add fees:
1-9 hens: $7/bird
10-15 hens: $5/bird
Where you looking for Marans? Thanks guys. I went to the feed store today and they said they won't be getting any dark laying hens. Looks like we'll wait until next year when we can afford it. However, I might ask my parents if they want to get some Cornish X, as the feed store was selling those and my parents have tossed around the idea of raising meat birds. Would it be okay to put these in the brooder with the "normal" chicks, or would they need their own brooder since they get so big so fast?

Anything that lays a really dark egg. The problem is that the guy I'm buying my chicks from only sells them as straight run, meaning I'd have to get a number of them and hope for a female. We just don't have $50 to spend on them right now. Is there anyone near Redding or Davis/Sacramento that sells them as sexed chicks?

Have you tried @PapaBrooder ? He is in Redding and I think has Marans
Yes, that's who I'm getting my chicks from. He only sells them as straight run, if I'm going to be buying Marans(actually my mom will be buying them as she is the one that wants chocolate egg layers) the chicks need to sexed so we only have to get one.
