Thanks guys. I went to the feed store today and they said they won't be getting any dark laying hens. Looks like we'll wait until next year when we can afford it. However, I might ask my parents if they want to get some Cornish X, as the feed store was selling those and my parents have tossed around the idea of raising meat birds. Would it be okay to put these in the brooder with the "normal" chicks, or would they need their own brooder since they get so big so fast?

Where you looking for Marans?

It is hard to get marans that lay really dark eggs from the feed store. There are a couple of local sourced for nice FBCMs(French Black Copper Marans)

Anything that lays a really dark egg. The problem is that the guy I'm buying my chicks from only sells them as straight run, meaning I'd have to get a number of them and hope for a female. We just don't have $50 to spend on them right now. Is there anyone near Redding or Davis/Sacramento that sells them as sexed chicks?

Oh, another question. I've heard chicks can be sexed by looking at the feathers on their wings when they're just a day or two old, is this true?

Yes, that's who I'm getting my chicks from. He only sells them as straight run, if I'm going to be buying Marans(actually my mom will be buying them as she is the one that wants chocolate egg layers) the chicks need to sexed so we only have to get one.
