Oh, I didn't necessarily mean on Marans, I mean on any breed. The chicks that I'm getting as straight run are Blue Laced Red Wyandottes, I'm picking them up the day that they hatch. Will I be able to sex those by the feathers on their wings? Here's the video I saw that introduced me to the idea;

Here is Chickengirl1304's website:

I see that she has a minimum number of 10 for chicks. But maybe that is for shipped chicks? You are pretty close to her, aren't you?

I'm about an hour away but would be willing to make the drive if it meant my mom could have the chick she wants. But not if there's a minimum of 10! Lol! I'll ask her about that when she gets back to me :) Thanks!

No change for my hen. I don't think I'll be showing her this year, and she will probably retire to being in our pet flock.

But I'm getting ready to set a couple OEGB eggs that my hens hid under a board in their coop.

Gives me an excuse to hatch them!

However, I might ask my parents if they want to get some Cornish X, as the feed store was selling those and my parents have tossed around the idea of raising meat birds. Would it be okay to put these in the brooder with the "normal" chicks, or would they need their own brooder since they get so big so fast?
I'm raising Cornish X right now. (almost 3 weeks old) I'd brood them separately. They grow fast and eat and poop about 5 times a normal chicken. Messy, messy. I would worry about smothering or regular chicks not being able to get to the feed.

Oh....I hope don;t have any lurking boys. I think the 3 remaining Marans I have are all girls. I'm actually not 100% sure the three I am thinking of are all Marans. One has white wing tips and very dark legs with no feathering. I am wondering if I mismarked the OE that hatched at the same time.

I hope the eggs hatch.

So sorry she is not improving.

This was the one with the eye issue, right? She should do fine even if she loses the vision in that eye. Animals tend to adapt to that sort of thing pretty easily.

Quote: She's doing quite well; foraging when I let her out, eating and drinking on her own, dustbathing, etc. I'm sure she'll be fine. She just won't ever be my showmanship bird again. And that's alright; she was fabulous for the years I had her.
