The digital control We put in the humidair broke in the on position. As mario says live by the cheap chinese electronics die by the cheap chinese electronics. Last year the wafer controler died in the same flipping position.

The new digital is one with American testing at least. Cant tell where things come from anymore. It got great reviews from people who do fineky things with fine control ( sous vide pottery colors that change at temps etc) and alarms when it goes high or low. The heat bar in the thing is good for another 50 years.

But I may be borrowing a dicky for a few months to see how I like it!!! Im very excited. 200 eggs at a time might pay for itself with electric savings over my massive thing. Im going to keep a complete hatching diary online so I can see real % and get all my owed shipped eggs. Im excited!

I just have to say this place is amazing. Ive been able to get lots of questions answered just by some simple searching

It looks like after our aborted attempt to get the Delaware's outside this weekend will be good for it. I really didn't want to start the adventure outside with mud soaked chickens

That's not good!  What are their symptoms?  I'm sure someone here may be able to help....

If its chicks id do corid asap. Cocci likes wet weather.

hope everyones flock is doing ok i got some chicks that are kinda sick after these days from the storm :-(

We were getting a 20% flock raiser/pig food from a guy up that way but he downsizes over winter and then mario lost his number! They ate a lot less of that stuff im thinking about showing up at the guys house and leaving a note at this point lol.

there symptoms are just that they are not as active and they are peeping a lot probably bc they are cold. but i did notice that some of them are like fluffy or fluffing their feather again this might be bc they are cold hopefully with sunny skies today they will warm up and do better

Check into coccidiosis. The fluffed up an lethargic symptoms fit.

I cannot believe how much just having a few chicks has made me want to expand my "sub-urban farming" operations.

What started out as a single garden box 5 years ago has become 4 raised beds and bunches of container vegetables. A small seed starting greenhouse. And looking to expand the grow space.

I've resisted the urge to start composting because I really don't have the "browns" to start with and it looks like a lot of work. I have no yard clippings any more. Now with the chickens I'm thinking I'm going to have to start.

I've resisted the urge to start composting because I really don't have the "browns" to start with and it looks like a lot of work. I have no yard clippings any more. Now with the chickens I'm thinking I'm going to have to start.

Sounds like "Chicken Math" is affecting your "Gardening Math"....

Mix up what they will drink in a day and make a fresh batch daily. If you get 20% powder, the treatment dose is 1 to 1.5 tsp. per gallon for 5 to 7 days and then 1/2 to 3/4 tsp. for another 5 to 7 days.

The second dose is to help them build up immunity.

Corid for cattle is what you want. It is a Thiamine disrupter so not vitamins until after treatment. Electrolytes is a good idea.

make sure they are all drinking the water. They recover quickly from cocci if they are not too sick. They can die within three days if not treated and are very sick.

I had this happen to my little silver Ameraucana last year. She kept going broody or staying broody so I gave her a few eggs. They were due to hatch right during that really hot spell we had last spring. One disappeared, one was eaten by someone at hatch, and the other chick I had to take away from her because it was so hot in the coop that it was not doing well. That still didn't break her. I finally persuaded her to give it up and then she died a few days later.

I wondered. That is very sad about your silver AM - they are such pretty birds!

Black Soldier flies! They will eat and compost your poo and meat you cant otherwise compost, and feed the grubs to the chickens. I do do meal worms too, its pretty easy, but not as useful as BSF. But you can do meals year round, the BSF are starting sloow this year. With that green hose you should do fermented feed and fodder too. Also, your chickens will eat the hell out of your plants, keep those beds enclosed.

what Ron said. any that are puffed up enough you are worried hand feed them water asap 2 or 3x. they wont drink and will pass otherwise if it is cocci.
