California - Northern

It will be easier to enclose the chickens at this point. My plan is to add a large 6x12 foot enclosed run to the 2 coops. (going to build a second one). Not the ideal but its about all the space I have that I can dedicate to the chickens. I also am planning to build an enclosed Composting section on my side yard and be able to send the chickens out there fairly often. (With the city ordinances I cant put them near the same place without destroying half my established garden.)

Any guesses on the adult coloring for the light chicks in this picture? I really have no clue what breeds/colors the parents are. This lady does not document that info. She is thinking Ameraucana hens covered by BCM Roos, but isn't sure. The eggs were from a place she was "Housesitting" so I'm not sure she really has any idea at all.

My 1 year old buff has pasty butt.

is there something else I can do besides just washing her? All the other girls don't seem to have any issues.
That is a symptom of worms. Have they been tested or treated for worms?

I had one break last year--she is an Amelia (Cream Legbar X Crele Pene) though.

They do not have to sit on eggs--you can give them a couple of chicks too. Even if she does not accept them it will break them.

Can you borrow a couple of just hatched or shipped chicks for a day?
Well..... No I don't know anyone close by that has any chicks and I am hesitant to introduce non-quarantined chicks into the area? I am assuming my local feed store has some. I am trying to downsize...... remember? :) I still have two big black orps and various others to find a home for. Funny how it is harder to actually do than talk about doing.

You forgot the most important step. You must stand over it and stare into it several times a day, while thinking "aretheydoneyet?aretheydoneyet?aretheydoneyet?"

I have lost a pheasant & a chicken to broodiness. I have another one trying & I have been physically pulling her off.

Where is that self preservation instinct???

I took 5 trays out of the incubator today

. It was clear everything had been overheated.

That is a lot of eggs. So sorry.

Wouldn't they die and effectively end their broodiness?

Wow that sounded snarky! It's actually a question! I've never had one stay broody so I don't know.

Why yes, that would effectively end it. Rather permanently. I was kind of hoping to avoid that but she seems like a broody butt. .

I had this happen to my little silver Ameraucana last year. She kept going broody or staying broody so I gave her a few eggs. They were due to hatch right during that really hot spell we had last spring. One disappeared, one was eaten by someone at hatch, and the other chick I had to take away from her because it was so hot in the coop that it was not doing well. That still didn't break her. I finally persuaded her to give it up and then she died a few days later.

Well that is an awful end. Mine is a Wheaten Ameraucana.

My 1 year old Blue Buff had that for a while and I am pretty sure it is an indication of something else..... BUT now she seems to have developed the vent gleet. I am tired of sick chickens in my house. They are stinky and throw up a lot of dust.

I have a technical question? I have noticed that sometimes folks are able to put @username in their post when addressing someone...are you all typing that or is it a button somewhere? Sometimes I felt teckiie challenged!

I wanted to ask chiqita if there was a thread on bsf.....

They have been treated or worms recently because my Anericuana was mouth breathing. I usually add ACV in their water. They get fermented feed and fodder also.
The next step would be to give them grit along with free choice oyster shell calcium. Pasty butt is a digestion problem and grit helps with digestion, even if they have access to dirt.

Keep us posted!

You have some pure bcm in there and a few mixed that will be blue maybe? The light chicks could be splash but they will not be bcm then. They could be lavender But then are not bcm and would need 2 self blue parents. But the black black and white ones look pure. The ones with brown patches are more likely mixed. You may need to watch the legs later to be sure.

Someone told me to add a little oatmeal to the diet for pasty in chicks. Won't Help if it worms however.

There are but I don't know where they are. Mario did the reserch and I learned from him. I will tell you we bite the bullet and bought the expensive bin after the ones we made sucked.

Quote: I had the still air wafer ad a horrid hatch rate. I just bought one of these and my hatch rate was awesome!

Amazon little over $100 bucks. No turner though. I already had one. All you do is plug it in and put water in every other day.

What model is this? And who was the seller on Amazon?

Is it this one?

Wow that's it no shipping... I thought I paid less for it. but worth everypenny the still air wafer was smaller, temps shifted and bad hatch rate for me, though some do fine with it.
