Does anyone know of a place to get a Killing/Restraint cone for under $20? I have been looking at them online and they are anywhere from $25 to $100...plus shipping. I don't want to spend a ton sinmce I don't know if I will do this again. I can't really fabricate anything myslef either so the ones I have seen here made from flashing are not really ans option and would cost a ton too since I don't have a pop riveter.
We use an orange safety cone at the farm. I saw some for sale at Lowes and I'm pretty sure that they were under $20.

Do they eat the beetle stage too?
Mine will eat anything I put out there....dead beetles, alive beetles, but they really prefer the worm stage. But it could be like the Black Widow discussion from before. Some will some won't. Who knew chickens could be picky?

Hmm have you tried isolating her in a wire bottom cage with food and water and no nest box. I have heard that works. No experience here though I am the broody enabler, the broody seeker and the broody celebrator....

Bah! I don't have one! Now I have 3 broodies.! Every time I turn around I am buying something else for this hobby..... Back to Craig's list.

Mites are bad in the spring to early summer. This winter has been bad because it was like spring too much of the time.

Now to May or so. Mites will not be bad when it is dry and hot.
What is the dust (or is it oil?) that most people are using as a preventative?

I grow mine too! I was trying to keep different ages in different bins, but its hard keeping up. BUT I've found an amazing way to get the worms out.
I use a spaghetti strainer to sift normally. So I just left it in there and noticed sometimes worms cllim INTO it.
So when I put produce in, I put some where the beetles can get it.
BUT I also put produce into the spaghetti strainer itself. Many worms climb in to feed, but the beetles are too big. They gather themselves. Saves me from having to pick out beetles when feeding. I don't want to feed those, it takes too long to get them.

That is a great idea! I want the worms, not the bettles, but when I put food out there the beetles take over. I really don't want to touch them any more than I have to and the strainer is a great idea.

Awesome! I live over by Solano College. I am county (not city) so I can have any many chickens as my husband will let me - no, uh, make that: as my neighbors will tolerate.

Did you have chickens when you were here? Were you in Fairfield city limits?
I was off of Waterman in a newer development. I had the 3 allowed chickens plus 9 more.

No one complained, of course that was around the time of the economic downturn so my closest neighbor house was empty. No one to complain of the noise or anything else. When I lived there I kept looking for SOMEONE in the area to be chicken buddies with but I was alone.

I need some assistance!

Which photos to enter in the chick photo contest? 2 entry limit. :)

Very poor photo quality, I know, just thought I'd give it a shot!
I like photo one and two. That little white chick could compete with Grumpy Cat. You know Grumpy Cat right? Maybe you should submit it with a picture of Grumpy Cat beside it! You can Google Grumpy Cat if you haven't seen him before.

This one reminds me of the the grumpy eagle on the Muppet Show...

THAT is exactly what that one reminds me of!!!! I knew he looked familiar to me!

What wormer did you use? If you used Wazine you might want to try Safeguard or Valbazen since Wazine only gets roundworms. You could also take a poop sample to a vet and have it checked for worms and bacteria. (fecal float and gram stain).

Kathy

I have some birds in quarantine.  Since you posted about ivermectin I am now looking at it cross-eyed thinking "why bother?"

Are these other brands easily found or only online purchases?  I could hit Nasco today.  You recommend Safeguard to get ALL the worms?

I think I needed to worm the breakfast makers.  Now that I'm up to so very many eggs a day, I hate to use anything that causes a withdraw period.  They might have to wait until fall.

I will do all the breeding pens though.  The eggs are still okay for hatching, right?

When Safeguard is used several days in a row it will treat most worms and if you want I can show you the studies that show that. Valbazen (albendazole) is probably a more effective wormer, but I haven't used it yet as I have some reservations about it which I need to talk to a vet about.

Safeguard when used 3 days in a row will treat roundworms, cecal worms, some tapeworms and gapeworms, but I'm not sure about capillary worms, it might get them in 3 days... Valbazen will treat roundworms, cecal worms, tapeworms and capillary worms, but not gapeworms in one dose according to one study I found. So bang for the buck, Valbazen is the better wormer, but it cannot be used with pigeons or baby llamas.

Lots of studies if you're interested... Do do have a vet that you can talk to?

Okay, now I am howling with laughter!  They'd be Duckens.

I have a duck that was raised with chickens, because of that he thinks he's a chicken and won't go near the ducks! We call him Chuck, lol.

Unfortunately you need the beetles to lay the eggs to hatch into mealworms. I hate them too....

I don't see where they say but there is a place for customer questions! :)

Thanks, I sent them the question :)

Oh My Goodness Jason. Who's eggs are those & where are they coming from? What breed? I want to be on that list.....LOL

Another pen & road trip ???

@fortyfivefarm
...I may have missed your response to my question but I was wondering.  When you said that your Dels and Coros hatched the best do the "Coros"= coronation sussex?  Not ready at this point but they are on my "to hatch" list.

That would be correct. Delawares & Coronation Sussex :). They are great birds. I usually have both chicks and eggs. Just let me know.
