Keep an eye on Craigs List. Hatching season will be ending soon.

The one @capayvalleychick picked up is working great after I adjusted the temp setting! and it was a good deal.
How long does hatching season usually last?

Some are ending now--those on the show circuit need them to be ready for the shows so they will stop now.

I would start looking for deals!

Having fun taking pictures of some of my chickens . . .

This GCM cockerel will be replacing his dad in the breeding pen this year~

Hatchery blue Cochins~

Blue Laced Red Wyandotte hen~

Splash, blue wheaten Ameraucana hen~

Bantam buff laced Polish and GCM roosters~

Chicken envy over here :)

First roses of the year:)

And some baby duckling cuteness:) We ended up hatching 6, but two didn't live past the first day:( The four left all look different, but seem to be doing well now.

Very pretty, flowers and duckies!!

Hope the birds and bugs stay away from your plums:) The plum/ pluot crop at my house is hit or miss. Some trees are loaded and some are very light this year. But out of 9 trees, I hope to get something after the critters take their " share" LOL.

Just set 45+ eggs in the bator. After this, I will do one more hatch by late May and put my bator away until fall:)

Our plums and apricots do good for a couple of weeks before the bugs seem to get at them. Love this time of year!

Yup, bobwhite actually take longer than chicken eggs. The worst thing, bobwhite are slaughter age more like 4 months. Another advantage to coturnix, they are ready to breed or eat at six weeks.

But I hatched them too and still keep them. I love their call. Also, I find their eggs easier to peel when I'm boiling them for a salad or deviled eggs. Coturnix eggs are easier to crack to use fresh (frying, poaching, etc)

Sorry I must have missed something or just assumed you were talking about Coturnix................

My god, Marans really are crazy, aren't they? They learned how to get the paper cones off the top of the waterer and now take off the cones and jump on top of the waterer and poop in the water. They also like to knock over their food and water several times a day. These chicks are driving me nuts! Lol

There are chickens in my van! The van is currently less than an hour outside of Redding, however, and I'm in Crescent City, so I haven't seen them yet...

The quarantine pen would be finished, had I thought to charge the cordless drills last night

but at least I'm just at the point where things need to be screwed together--I took the opportunity to get everything measured and cut and figured out the roost, nest box (since both birds are laying--it could take awhile for them to start back up after the move, right?) and feeder. I've got an extremely temporary pen set up in the garage so the pullets can eat and drink while we're at church and while I finish up their pen in the afternoon. My current girls had a nice long day of ranging the yard today--their last freerange until quarantine's over, since I figure it doesn't make a lot of sense to go to the trouble of quarantining if I let the girls wander over by the quarantine pen...

Hi lovely chicken folk! Finally my work week is over, I can sit back with a beer and hang out with other chicken people.
It's been a busy week at our place. Goat drama for one, everyone's ok though.

We got a new hen from Chickee who we love! She's a buff Ameraucana and is a sweet little thing. Ellie hasn't laid any more wind eggs, but we still have hope for her and also hope she and the new buff will be best buds.

I finally have my blue egg which was all I ever wanted when we said "hey, lets get chickens!"

Here's some straight out of the camera snap-shots of all our egg colors now.

With fill flash.

Hello everyone! I hail from the Bay Area. I'm just starting out - getting things ready to build our coop/run and we'll be getting peepers in May!

I've already learned so much from this thread - it moves FAST. Looking forward to learning more :)
