Thinking of getting 4 more chicks from the feed store today. Do you think they will be ok with the 2 week old Buff Orps.
Your orps are mild mannered and there are only 2 of them but you will be surprised at how much bigger they are than 3 day old chicks. I have integrated 3 day old chicks in with older ones but I watched them closely and put a little box or something that they can hide in until they feel comfortable. Could you divide the brooder up so they could see each other but not have contact just for a little while to give them time to adjust to each other?

By the way, Monet and I enjoyed meeting you and your daughter! Your chicks are adorable and of course I liked talking chicken with other chicken owners! Monet is on the shy side plus this was the second time in a week that she was in on extended chicken talk! It never keeps her from coming so I figure she secretly like listening!

It was great to meet you too. You will have to help me move to breeding birds sometime in the future.

We shall see how it goes. Though I would like to gets some rocks my wife says if they dont look like easter chicks she wont like them :)

Now, how can she not love little faces like this:

or this:

Now that 2 of 6 eggs hatched, momma is overly protective of one and aggressive towards the other. Should I separate mom into her normal coop and just let the chicks live in the brooder? Only 2, all the others are quitters.

You could switch them out, and the day after you eat him say "something" happened to him. So now you'd like the sweet one back.
Hey that gives me a better idea than my original. When I no longer have both quarantined and broody girls...I should have the space to do the switch and then keep the bad apple isolated until D-Day. Good suggestion.
I would tell him that you are going to process and replace him because he has become unmanageable. Give him the opportunity to suggest an alternative. Safety first you know.

I would really like to have that conversation but believe me when I tell you that family politics dictate the decision not to. I totally agree with you though and thanks for you input.

If she is acting aggressively toward one I would pull them both and brood them in the house.

Just checked on my broody mama! She has 5 chicks! The last one hatched in the night or early this morning. Its biological mama is one of my Ameraucanas, either Lavender or Blue Wheaten. It is 24 hours younger than the oldest chick and when I checked on them just now, Mama and 4 babies were out of the nest box in a corner of the brooder area. Poor littlest baby was crying in the box. Annie was clucking to it but it is too young to follow her out of the nest. I tucked it under her and hope that she stays put for a while. I may have to bring it in and put it under a heat lamp for a few hours.
