California - Northern

Thanx Vicki - since almost all my neighbors (same zoning) have chickens and/or roosters I'm going to keep my fingers crossed and go forward.

Post office lost some eggs. shipped 2 boxes to one person at the same time one shows up other is missing.
lets see what usps says
I hope that they find it soon! I ordered eggs this spring from a breeder here in CA. They were shipped in two boxes from the same PO. They were processed through 2 different distribution centers here in the bay area. One was delivered in the AM and the other in the PM. Crazy!

Hi... thanks for chiming in. Seems like things have settled down for now. It helped tremendously to get Norma into her own space so that Jamie Lee could have that nest and her golf balls. She has not tried to crowd Petunia out since.

My two on eggs are due to hatch on Saturday. Jamie Lee if she sticks will get Delaware eggs on Monday or after the the babies hatch...which ever happens sooner.

If I were to give her chicks they would be either be something I want from @Papa Brooder or something I don't really want from closer to home. Since I decided that I really want to hatch at least one clutch of Dels. I have decided to try JLC out with those. Harriet lays a beautiful egg and I have been saving them in case I got another broody so I am ready to go.

Good luck with your hatches. When are they due?

I think i just gave mine eggs this past tuesday -- the SPPR had been sitting on some marans eggs but she kept forgetting which nest was hers, they got cold several times, and none hatched -- but she's still eating ok & seems sturdy still, so she got a new round of eggs. the other broody, one of the young birchen marans pullets, hasn't done this before, so hoping they don't mind hatching chicks at the same time...

I got confirmation that Concord Feed in Pleasant Hill gets its chicks from Privett. I wonder how "pure" their delewares are?
I've been trying to find more information about how the breed was developed. I know it starts with a Rock Roo and NH hen but is that it?

I found some of the sex link stuff interesting. It looks like using a Del Hen and a Buff Orp Roo may produce a weak sex link trait.

If I can ever find some additional space to house birds I may very well start playing with Breeder stock and hatching my own. Primarily just for fun I don't really have an interest in breeding for show at least not yet.

Thank you to Ron & Deb for posting the links to the sex link discussions. I was thinking about this today after some discussion on it on the CL hybrid thread. I was wondering if my Pita Pinta/Cream Legbar and Pita Pinta/Barred Rock crosses would be sex-links. I definitely have some barred boys and solid black girls. According to this chart, a mottled java (would it be the same with a mottled PP? ) cock crossed with a barred female would produce black sex-links. CL are barred so would it work the same?

niclandia said that mottled is mottled so Pita Pintas and anconnas would be the same as Mottled javas. I think you are correct. Cream Legbars are double barred? If so then the females do have the barring Gene and you would make black sex links.

The Crele Pene pullets make sex links when crossed with the UofA rooster too. The Boys have a spot on the head and wind up Barred. The girls are all black.

Very cool. They are auto sexing Olive eggers!

Very cool!!! If my Cream Legbars don't work out, I will want to talk to you about the U of A's or are they now called Arkansas Blues? Auto sexing OEs would be very neat to have!

here is some though the head sot is hard to se on the first cross. the hens I hatched will be bred to a Crele Penedesenca rooster.
rooster in the middle hen next to him. hen looks exactly like the crele except a bit of salmon on the chest and comb is much smaller at this age

you can also see a hen on top with roosters next to her and over to the side

My very first LF blue Langshan came from Concord Feed. She got good comments on the Langshan thread and I was planning on using her in my breeding program until she met an untimely demise when our young dog tried to play with her. She was broody and did not react to the dog's invitation to play like the other chickens did.

She had good body conformation but was on the small size. I think that's one of the most noticeable differences between LF birds from a hatchery and those from a breeder. When you see them side by side, it is easy to tell which is which.

The cross needs to be with a barred hen, so Crele pene by UofA Blue makes OE Sex links. Chrissy hatched two of them today too. Deanne has Crele Penes still?

Jason may have some Crele Penes that lay very dark eggs next year too.
