New brooder box is nearly done. Just need to add in the divider panels and Ill have a box 6 feet long just shy of 2 feet wide an 27 inches deep with a wire floor supported by removable pressboard so I can fill with cob litter and remove through the floor. Ill have options for solid or wired slide in dividers. Later I'm going to add optional wire viewing openings on the front side panel. Ill have pics soon.

Should be able to house both age groups pretty well and have the new coop ready soon so I can move the older buffs outside which will make room for more chicks as the fostered orps grow out.

Final count 39 chicks:) 3 are still fluffing up in the bator. 2 eggs failed to pip.

What a great hatch! They all look wonderful!

Quote: She is doing well. I put here and her sister out with the broody hen and the chicks that are about a week older in a pen. She is slower and smaller even than her sister, but she is foraging and trying to keep up. She doesn't seem to quite get the idea of getting under the broody for warmth though. I put a brooder light out there with them and she is using it. I will check on them i about 30 minutes ans see how things are going. I will bring her and sis in soon, but want them all bonded for when she is big enough and moving well enough to stay with Mom.
I used the Avitron yesterday, but will go out for the Poly Vo Sol today. I have been seeing everyone talk about it here and meaning to grab some when I was out, but kept forgetting.

Quote: What would you do with the rat after you caught it with that one.
My favorite is the electronic ones. Just wish they weren't so expensive.

That sounds great! I an still trying to figure something out. I have one of the 1/2 height water troughs, but I can't figure out a secure way to close the top. Square edges would be so much easier to build a top for.

I asked this last night but i think it got lost. one of the eggs i have i think died. the yolk moves when the egg is turned and i dont think its supposed to co that.

Right now Im using a 1/4" hardware cloth sifting frame over the cardboard box. You could do something similar (2"x4" frame with stapled hardware cloth) I made it such that after it served to cover the box it would serve as a soil sifter. I even used a couple of screws in the side and wire to hang feeder and water to keep it clean as they got bigger. You might need more than one for a trough.

Does anyone have chicks hatching today?

I finished one hatch this morning and saw the first pipped Dorking egg this morning for the next hatch!

I wonder how many will be out after work today?

I had chicks hatch yesterday in the incubator. 27 set to hatch: 23 hatched, 1 still working on it, and 3 with no signs of activity. One of my broodies also hatched 2 eggs and we gave her two Pita Pinta chicks last night just in case hers didn't hatch. We also gave 2 PP eggs to a broody Wellie because all of her eggs were duds. They are happily sitting with their chicks inside our small coop.

I stuck some tiny eggs under an OEGB and it looks like three have pipped. Two are from my Modern Game Banty pair (MGB?) and one is from my Buff Japanese, but daddy could be anyone, lol. Also have some problem eggs in the incubator. Sigh...

Thinking about putting a bunch of pea eggs under my broody BBW, that would be interesting, lol.

Hope you come home to a bunch of healthy chicks!

Forgot to mention, I think I had one of them "wonky" or saddle air cells. It pipped internally, but couldn't do the external, so I helped. It's very weak, so not sure it will make it.
