OK....I did it...I processed my first meatie....all by myself. It is now resting comfortably in the fridge. It was not nearly as traumatic as I thought it would be. Took me about an hour and half from start to finish, but the next ones will go faster now that I know what I am doing. Plucking took the longest of course. He was 4.4 lbs pre-process and finished out 3.6. I found a great thread here with pictures that really helped. Here he is...ready to bag and tag.

You know what I find funny is that this little Cream Legbar chick was immediately accepted into the flock by everyone. She has never been bothered by the big girls, unlike the two Marans which everyone hated at first.

Hey that's weird! I've had the darnedest time integrating my fbcm. There of them at different ages and it's the same with all three. And they fight back all weird ( that's my technical description) I'll bet I have all boys darn it!

Thank Ron. Do you or anyone have a link for the plain Frontline drops? I've looked all over the web and only found the Plus. At least with the drops I can do my dogs too. I only found the spray

I only found plus at the million stores I went to. That's when I found the Promethrin dust. Anyone else ever use that before???

Aww, babies!

I think the new brooder is a hit with the little chicks. They were able to run/fly end to end and get into all sorts of mischief this morning.
 Down and feathers flying but they seem happy.  Even the bigger ones can stretch wings a bit in it. Im pretty sure Ill be adding wheels to it in the near future.


Ive been thinking of buying a rabbit cage and sticking a covered nest box and roosting plaform and putting it inside the run when introducing new young chicks to the flock. The all wire cages do not seem to be terribly expensive and have a fair amount of room. Might cramp larger birds but being able to let chicks outside without fear the bigger birds could go after them. Anyone use rabbit cages for protecting isolating birds?

I'd like your guys opinion on this...do these babies have enough crest feathers yet to tell gender? What do you guys think - 2 girls, 2 boys, or 1 girl and 1 boy?

I'm not sure how you would know. I would look for injuries that have healed...maybe it being very shy and overreactive..

Nikki - I honestly don't know how you'd tell. A lot of people think that with dogs, if they raise their hand and the dog flinches, it was abused. I can't tell you how many times I've heard, "Oh, we think she was abused because bla bla bla" and most of the time it's just things that most dogs are going to find scary, such as raising up a hand. I'd say there's probably no way to tell with a rooster except for looking for healed injuries. Some may be shy or aggressive because they were abused, and some may be shy or aggressive simply because that's who they are. There's probably no sure way to know if a roo was abused.

Great job! We'll be doing 5 or 6 tomorrow morning, and the rest on Sunday morning. They are getting a tad old, 10 weeks.
