Wellies are not supposed to be a broody breed, and many say they do not make good mothers. With that said, I have had 1 hen go broody twice. The first time, she was not the greatest sitter (would switch nests), but she was great with the one chick she hatched out. The 2nd time she was much better. I'm going to remove this hen from my breeding because I do not want broody welsummers. (I have other hens for that)

I guess that I'm just "lucky" then to have 2 out of 3 broody!

I guess that it's a good thing that I'm not trying to breed them at this point!

My girls definitely have character! One of them always flys up to the top of the brooder when I open it to say hello and check for snacks. Something tells me she's gonna be my troublemaker.

My DH thinks that, too. He used to roll his eyes but now after 4 yrs of helping me with chickens, he just sighs and does whatever I ask. I would rather err on the side of over caution than it regret it later. Even with my OCD chicken keeping, accidents sometimes happen. Last year, I made the mistake of putting a half filled bucket of water in a grow out pen at the farm. The chicks in the pen were almost full sized but I guess that they were so thirsty that the mobbed the bucket. Two went head down in it and drowned.

As I have said before Debi...I find that chickens are NOT the smartest animal on the farm.......LOL

I go to the county fair to watch my grand daughter show her pig. If she happened to win I would then go on to the state fair to watch her there...... Thanks for the heads up. I will keep it.

How fun!  And a mystery to boot!    I wonder if you will eve br able to figure out where it came from.  How were you able to figure out the specific goose breed?  DO you have neighbords who might have geese with babies?  I know some of the softer mouthed  dog breeds (retrievers, etc) will sometimes carry babies away without hurting them.  I wounder if someone brought you a gift..

My closest neighbor is 3/4 mile away. We're out in the Suisun Marsh, a big hunting/wildlife/recreation area south of Fairfield. There are only a handful of people that live full-time out here and no one close has anything other than cats or dogs. There are wild nesting Canada geese out here. I figure the little one got lost. I am really surprised how far it traveled. Or I guess the rest were hiding really well.
There are also around 250 tule elk out here. We regularly have 20-30 in a field across the road from us each day. Fun to watch.

I live in a little town called Day in Modoc county, and when asked where i am from I always say I live in far northeastern California.

We have always considered the San Fran bay area the dividing line.
