Agreed!!!

They're patient even with people that aren't new, like me!! In case you haven't noticed, half of my posts are questions lol! And I'm certainly not a newbie anymore. This is a great thread, everyone is so nice and I don't think I've ever seen a fight happen on this thread.

The info I've learned on this thread is AMAZING!

Congrats on the babies! I have never seen an R-Com in person...would strawberry baskets fit in there?
Thanks! Yes, the small square type strawberry baskets would fit.

Now that I've seen chicks hatch, I wonder if it's ok to confine them to a small basket, though. These chicks are climbing all over the dividers from one end of the incubator to another. Seems like they'd be squished if they hatched in a small container.

The ones that Ron uses are larger. I'll have to see what I can fit in there once this hatch is over. I really want a hatcher.

Neither of the two that died had worms so thats unlikely that only two birds wouldnt get tgem. they have also been wormed and get punpkin seeds as a preventive
How do you know they didn't have worms? Some worms, like capillary worms are very small and live in the crop, esophagus and intestines and they can be very hard to treat.

I've read the definition and looked at the illustrations in the SOP, and I still can't tell the difference between vulture hocks and correct feathering on feet.
Not that it applies to me, because I have clean legged breeds. Just curious, though.
Vulture hocks refers to incorrect feathering growing on the lower thighs. (Can't quote from the copyrighted SOP).
A simple test for vulture hocks is to push up the thigh feathers with your palm. Hard feathers on the thighs extending towards the foot-vulture hock. D

In the past, my head hen and her enforcers often jumped some of the other lower on the pecking order girls like a cock would. The result was broken back feathers just as if they had been mated. My poor Buff Brahma looked especially bad. Once Zorro established his dominance, all of that ended. Now that he is out at the farm, I wonder if Precious and her cronies will start doing this again?!
My girls do that too! and after they mount, they jump off and peck their heads. I like to put my roosters in there sometimes, they'll run and knock off any hen trying to do that. They mounting hens look VERY surprised, lol!

My DD comes in yesterday and says " I think the dogs are howling or something. It keeps waking me up in the morning"
"Nope, that's Pete. My new rooster. He's just getting it down"
And this morning she wasn't late to school. Up about 25 minutes earlier than normal.
Thanks Pete

I'm getting fed up with my 6 or 7 week old Marans cockerel. I put my two 6 week old Buff Polish outside in the pen, and the dang thing is bullying them. The poor things are huddled in a corner, the only place they feel safe. It's hot out and I'm worried they won't be able to get water. Stupid cockerel...

5 happy ducks from the crazy duck hatch too! everyone seems to be doing well now.

MANY SHOWGIRLS! Peaches and flame went wild!!! I got almost all showgirls this hatch!

How many does that make you have hatched so far?
I on purpose haven't counted them!

I have details from every hatch but I'm not about to add up the totals! I've sold several, taken some to the farm, and I'm bringing some to Karen's next Sunday. I'm growing out the Langshans and some of the Pita Pintas to improve my breeding flocks. I want to hatch some RIR but none of the eggs have been fertile. I think that I need to trim some butts. My hen is obviously being bred but the eggs are duds. The pair have their own breeding pen so I know that no other boy is getting her. I also have a few last Bresse chicks. We have sold all the adults but I'm kind of regretting it and may keep the best trio or quad from these chicks.
