Darned Jays!

I have a couple of girls that like to lay in the sack of shavings in the feed shed. The Jays got in and broke but didn't eat the eggs.

My frizzle girl likes to lay in a dogloo dog house that sits out in the yard. It's an XL one and she goes way in the back but they darn Jays got her egg too.

I leave pen doors open when the girls are ranging so they can get in and lay eggs and grab a snack and a drink if they want to. Chased a stinking Jay out of there too but fortunately before it got anything.

I gave away three of my original flock on Saturday. Della, who has always had laying issues, and Vivian and Boom Boom my Red Stars who were both slowing down, having weak shell issues etc. They went to one of my colleague's parents. They will live in a big barn and have 2.5 acres on which to range for the rest of their days. They should be able to still get 6-8 good eggs out of the 3 of them per week but it feels good knowing I was able to thin my flock in this way.

I am down to 16 hens/pullets of laying age but three of them are broody and 2 are silkies so really I am down to 12. There are chicks coming up. But they don't count

@BCollie . I followed a simpler ff method. one bucket, keep about a half inch or so of water on top. Stir frequently, replace with additional feed when it gets low and repeat. Easy Peasy. I am going to add a second bucket this summer because some times it doesn't have time to reach full ferment before I feed it with the one bucket. But as long as you keep some as a "starter" once you get it going, you can keep it going as long as you want. I would say stirring it and making sure there is enough moisture are the keys and I just dip it out liquid and all. they don't mind the moisture and as the weather warms up it will help them to stay hydrated.

They never do.

That makes me feel better. We use Oxine in the incubators and brooder for sanitizing. So the only way the ecoli could have gotten started is via un-washed eggs in the incubator.

I've dipped eggs in Oxine before incubating and had great results. I was afraid to do that with shipped eggs so chose not to on the last batch. I'm sure the 3 eggs from under the broody would have been the culprit. In the future if I'm adding eggs from under a broody, I shall wash them in Oxine before putting them in the bator. In fact - ALL eggs may end up getting the Oxine wash. This cannot keep happening! Another dead chick this morning. I hatched 24 out of that batch and I'm afraid they are all going to die!

This chicks are all going on a little vacation into a new rubbermaid and their space is getting sanitized again today! Hopefully TSC or somewhere is open for a few hours so I can buy the right antibiotic.

I hope you are able to figure something out, that sounds awful.
My 2 year old does also. But we had a group move in a month or so ago and chased every other bird off the property, even the big magpies. So I had my husband take a couple out when she was in her bath last week so she didn't see. Haven't seen the rest of the little buggers since. Hopefully the pretty, quieter songbirds will come back soon.
I live next to a crazy cat lady (other than the hordes of cats, she's actually a good neighbor), so the scads of sparrows and little finches and most of the hummingbirds were already gone. Those things almost never manage to snag one of the Jays though.

Just to inform everyone in the area, I received an interest for an add I had to get rid of a pullet I thought was a rooster. An add I forgot to take down. Anyways the guy responding wanted to purchase it and wanted to send me a cashiers check of 700 something bucks for a 15 dollar chicken. He called this morning saying the cashiers check would be arriving soon in a middle eastern accent as his photo shows an American looking man. I am 100 percent sure it is a scam for I checked his page and see he is responding to several classified adds. Please be careful. Abraham something for his profile name. I will check when I can get on the computer but for now I'm on my phone and can't view multiple windows to go back. Please be aware.
Classic scam, sending a cashiers' check for too much, he'll want you to deposit it and keep an extra chunk of change for your troubles and give him the rest, then later your bank will call and let you know the cashiers' check was actually counterfeit. Glad you're getting the word out. Might want to send a head's up to a moderator.

Yeah thanks, how do I do that??

Where did he find your ads? Just curious...

I have never had an ad on here. He found a post from last year where I mentioned that I had a Rooster to re home.

If you look at his history, he is only posting on threads with sales.
