California - Northern

@ronott1 , has anyone here ever compiled a list of feeds and mills in CA? Before I found this group, I'd never heard of Bar-Ale and I had no idea that King had a poultry line.

Okay, there is most definitely movement in several of my eggs. The Tolbunt Polish is especially wiggly! I could see a little shadow moving around in there...it was so beautiful. I had to take a video to share with my best friend. It's been almost exactly 8 days since they were set, but today is counted as day 7 since I set them so late that day. This is such an amazing thing to experience!

2 BLRW out!

P**ssed off broody hen. One more egg pipped. I now at least one of the other 2 eggs probably will not hatch (looked like a qutter but I put it under her anyway). Not sure on the 5th egg...

Sweet looking hen and cute chicks! Hope your other eggs hatch!

Nice selection! That Speckled Sussex is looking very roo-ish with that big comb. Barred Rock could go either way, but the comb is not huge so leaning toward pullet. The others look like pullets though. I really love the print!

Does it matter that the Sussex is probably a couple days older than everyone else? These are the first chicks I've raised, I don't know how much their development can vary across different ages. They sure grow like weeds! Anything I should be looking for to point towards roo rather than pullet?

Also, they are all very interested in ESCAPING the brooder. I don't really have the room for a grow-out pen, but can I put them in 5 sided mesh box with the open side on the grass for supervised time outside for a little bit each day?

We are finishing the coop this weekend, so I'm hoping to have it ready for when the youngest (the Australorp) has feathered for the most part and they can all go outside in their Palais des Poulets. Although, I'm so paranoid about rats that I put hardware cloth everywhere, so we may call it "Hens Deep"...

Inwrongcountry,
I don't think a day or two difference in age will make much difference.
There is always a top chicken even with all hens/pullets.
Escaping is high on the list here also, followed closely by hide behind the washing machine.
Not sure what the temps are doing overnight in the bay area but they do have each other to snuggle up with.

After today's vet appt. the phoenix cockerel is wearing shackles. He believes it is splay leg rather than a slipped tendon. His legs are being held parallel with a foam pad, he wasn't sure it will correct or not but there was no breaks, swelling, and he didn't react like there was pain when being manipulated. He impressed them with his demeanor through the whole thing, his short nap while being held may have had something to do with it.

Has anyone else had splay show up at 7/8 weeks?
