I just called my vet to see if they can test for mycoplasma, they're going to call their lab and get back to me after 9 when the lab opens.

So if this is MG and I choose to euthenize a bird and send it in, can I do this AFTER they have recovered since I will be treating it? Can I have my vet euthenize the chicken with an injection like they do for dogs/cats, or will this affect the results? 

It is a long drive, but UCD Will euthenize and test for free. It may be cheaper to drive there then to pay for the Vet test.

Too bad the carrion Lilly is not blooming now. That would be a kick to see at the Arboretum on Campus.

$90 round trip, so yes probably cheaper than a vet visit and shipping the body. Can I treat her before I send her in or does she need to go in untreated?

Part of the testing is seeing the symptoms. Don't treat before submitting the bird. Send the bird with the worst symptoms.

You would know in 5 days and then add some more.

The eggs are very cheap compared to hatching eggs from breeders. The price of 12 is less then some charge for one egg! Sorry to those selling them, but $50.00 per egg is way too expensive.

$50 per egg!!! Yikes..maybe if I win the lotto. Maybe I will got for TJ eggs the first go...

Ok because I really want to talk about something other than sick chickens.

Im trying to decide about the size of my breeding flock.

I'm looking at possibly 6 pens 2 for Legbars 2 for trying to start Delawares (I'm more interested in utility birds at this point with them) and 2 more to expand with. I really like the look of the Pita Pintas. @PetRock has. And wouldnt mind raising my own Buff Orps. (Crosses with Delawares produce red sexlinks.)

What would be the issues around having a Bachelor pad for extra Roos. Im thinking I would breed 1 root to 5 hens and have a large mixed laying flock pen, and a meat grow out pen.

For those of you that have CCL, do your chicks have vaulted skulls or poofs at hatch?

The pyncheons have "tassels" according to the SOP, none of my chicks have top hats. I figured that since they weren't true crested birds the tassel would grow in as they feather out.

When I say they have been hanging around my home Its only because Ive spotted them around 3 times in the last 2 weeks. They have been in the front yard mostly I have never seen them in my back yard at all.

All my chickens have discovered they like Watermelon as I gave some to the guys in the brooder this weekend. Even the fosters, which have been pretty skittish to date, have started to look for the handout.

I switched over to nipple water in my brooder box this weekend but really cannot tell yet if they have learned to use them. The coke bottle in bike water bottle holder works really nicely.

I piked up some drain pipe to make a couple of PetRocks pipe feeders for the new coop and am having a hard time believing that they do not make a 40 degree elbow for 3" pipe. (Couldnt find it at Home Depot but they had it for 4" pipe which is not the same)

Chris, did you find the parts you needed for this? We just got back last night from visiting family in Colorado. I'm slowly working through the posts from the past 6 days. In regards to the feeders, we used a Y piece instead of a 40 degree elbow. We bought ours at Lowe's because Home Depot never seemed to have the pieces we needed. I was going to shoot a video of the construction of one of them but we ended up having to put them together in a hurry before leaving on vacation. My daughter who doesn't like chickens did most of the chicken chores for us while we were away and I wanted to make it as easy as possible for her.

No vaulted skulls. The crests grow out with feathers the feathers.

If there is only boys in a pen then one will be dominant and there shouldn't be much fighting. It works out well for us.
