I wish I could take one of them to home depot so I would know a good size hole.

I have hog/livestock panels around my patio to keep the birds off it when they backyard free range. The openings are 3 in square and the chicks pop in and out of them all the time until they reach about 7-8 weeks old. They also go in and out of the field fencing around our garden. So far, the little chicks have done minimal damage to the plants and by the time they are big enough to destroy things, they will be too big to fit through the fence. If you do choose to use a turned over box, make sure to have 2 openings to allow the little ones to escape out the second door if one of the older ones gets in.

Does anyone know how chicken genetics work in regards to male or female chics? Does the rooster dictate gender?

I have no problem with people wanting to look at your house when adopting a pet(we often do home checks before adopting out a dog to someone, but not always) but to say you'll never let a cat outside is a bit crazy. We have one cat that we don't let out because he's too old/weak to fend for himself, but the other turns into a demon if he's not allowed outside.

  You crack me up    Yes I think we are a bunch of funny yolks.
A 1 foot cubed nest box?  For a LF Brahma?  LF Brahma's are huge, just enormous!  I have one.  She can completely fill a 5 gal bucket.  I think 1 foot cubed is wide enough but perhaps not deep enough to allow her to feel safe.  Just a thought.  I have a nest box that is only about 14" deep in the SFH pen and they crawl in it, and sometimes things happen.  Today one laid an egg with her hind end hanging far enough out that the egg fell to the bottom of the coop and broke.  That nest box needs fixing!

What a beautiful coop!  I like immediate gratification so this style never works well for us.  They are so pretty though, I always admire them and wish I had the personality type to finish something like this.

I use a metal grating that has narrow slats. I use it to block of a section of the run and keep water in that section as well.  The little ones can go into that section to escape the bigger ones.  Once the little ones are big enough, they don't need to escape - good thing because they can't fit through the slats by then

Re: LBrahma and nestbox size. Thank you for comment - I thought it might be too small as she is already soooo big at 5 weeks. I was already going to extend the nest box to 2' deep, so glad to hear that it won't be wasted space.
I can also make the height taller if that would be better for her. Please let me know what you think.

My last batch of ducklings were 8 males, 1 female. Never had that happen before, lol.

It depends on hatch percentage. The closer you are to 100%, the more likely you are to have half males and half females.

Still, you sometimes hatch more of one than the other gender. Some Hens will lay more of either male or female embryo, kind of like Henry the eighth only having Girls.

From what I can the hen is born with the eggs she will have and there is nothing to be done about it. So to some extent the gender of all chickens ever haa already been determined its just a choose your own adventure on what we hatch!
