California - Northern

I managed to pass up the Barred and Partridge Rocks they had left from the weekend at a dollar each. Cant remember the 3rd kind they had. Still about 60 or so chicks left.

This is their last week for them.

A dollar each just isn't playing fair, lol!
I have a lot of little black sex links here and some will be green egg layers! Just in case you change your mind and need a cute little black sex link!

You're feeding the addiction!

I picked up two Cream Legbar chicks from John Brekken in Loomis yesterday. It was a convenient detour from I-80 while I was driving from Lake Tahoe to the SF Bay Area.

He is a very nice person to deal with. He gave me a tour of his pens and discussed some of his philosophies and policies on raising, breeding, and selling chickens. He also talked to me a bit about the chicks I was buying. The pictures on BYC are great, but it was nice having a hands-on demonstration and explanation.

He usually lists on the Sacramento Craigslist, but has a posting in the Bay Area region today. I haven't seen the varieties he is offering at the Los Gatos hardware store, at Pollinate (Oakland), or at TSC (Gilroy): (Icelandics, Marans, copper and birchen, Lavender orpingtons, Brabanters, Swedish Flowers, Jubilee orpingtons, Norwegian Jaerhons, Creme Legbars)

I have a friend who is looking for Cream Legbar chicks for her broody hen. My friend raises Jersey Giants and had shipped eggs from Georgia that are now on day 24 with no signs of activity. She is looking for JG, Ameraucana, or CL chicks.

I just had what I thought was going to be a Bresse chick hatch. It is a cute little yellow chick with feathered legs & feet! Most of our Bresse have been sold but there is one of the original hens left that I call Squatty. Her legs are shorter than any other Bresse that we had. This was her egg. She is in a pen with one of my Langshan trios and a young Bresse cockerel. I guess I shouldn't be surprised that Link nailed her. He is the alpha cock in the pen! I wondered what a Langshan Bresse cross would look like and I guess now I'll get to find out! It sure is a loud little thing!

Re: LBrahma and nestbox size. Thank you for comment - I thought it might be too small as she is already soooo big at 5 weeks. I was already going to extend the nest box to 2' deep, so glad to hear that it won't be wasted space.
I can also make the height taller if that would be better for her. Please let me know what you think.
Thank you!

HI Colleen. What kind of Brahma do you have and is it a breeder or hatchery stock? This matters because hatchery stock is smaller than breeder quality. Dark Brahma's are also smaller than lights. So if you have hatchery Dark Brahma's, the 1 ft high is fine. If you have breeder lights, then you might want to expand the size of the box.

So in case anyone ever wonders: Bresse make great moms. Day one.
But Have any of you ever seen a broody peck a little at the chick (it's feet actually) I think to get it to go back and hide under mama?
I don't recall seeing that before. I think that's what she was doing. Happened once, then that was it
I have seen mine do it. It's just a gentle peck to get their attention. I have even seen then give a little tap on the head.

Why not? I have seen people bring all kinds of dogs into HD...why would a chicke be any different?
Quote: Yup. I tried to adopt a dog once. The lady's house was far worse than mine could ever be in it's worst state, and she wanted to come inspect my home. (her house reeked of dog urine) She also told me the puppies were pure Australian Shepherds, which they were clearly not. I said no thanks and left.

You adopt a cat around here, and you have to sign something stating you will never let it outside. And yep, they want to come inspect your house.

Does anyone know how chicken genetics work in regards to male or female chics? Does the rooster dictate gender?
The hen determines the gender.
My Mom adopted a cat from a rescue that said they had the right to inspect her home and set rules about what she could and could not do with it, but they never even contacted her after she took him home.

Quote: In the finch world there are theories gender control by the hen. It is said not to be pre-determined as the hen grow, but that she determines the gender of the chicks in each clutch she lays. Some people seem to take that to me that she is making a consious decision about the sex of each individual chick but it is really more that her body is determining what sec chicks have the best chance of making based on conditions. If food i abundant and the right level of protiens available, themperatures and humidity right, etc they will produce more female chicks. If conditions are less idea; then more male chicks will be produced.

Quote: Our Costco here in Chico is no longer carrying the chickens stuff (hen houses or layer feed) I think you can still order the hen houses online though

Quote: I have the little gray one (the same on Chris has I think). It is good for separating them, but I would definitley not trust it against predators. The would is very lightweight and would not take much to break thru it.

In other news, the feedstore had tons of little Black Sex Links in and they were so freaking cute, but I managed to walk out without getting any! See, I'm not an addict.
That is excellent resistance!

I got a smaller one from Costco 2 years ago (for a Serama pair). Not impressed with the quality after 2 years of weathering. Entire structure has loosened up and doors are not fitting well, external nest boxes are sagging a bit, although everything is still together and usable. We even attached the coop to a wooden frame for stability. I don't think it would do well being moved frequently, especially if it will be on uneven ground.
Mine has been inside the covered pen and is not having a problem with the weather, but the nest box is sagging. I had to put a support under it. I disassemble and store it in the winter so maybe it is holding up better because of that
