Do you think it could have been the heat that did her in? I hope that's all it is. I'm shipping her off for necropsy today, I just put her in the fridge. Do you have the link to Kathy's thread about how to send in a bird for necropsy?

Just go back a couple pages and find her post on the baby birds

I just found Darla, one of my Speckled Sussex, dead in the nest box. Now I can't stop crying. She smells bad, so she must have died yesterday morning and I just didn't notice. Will someone please link me to the link in Kathy's signature, how to send a bird in for necropsy...
So sorry that you lost her.

It was a hot one yesterday and very hard on our big girls. I have 2 broodies in the coop that cannot be persuaded to give it up. One whole side of my coop opens up for cleaning and I just left both doors open yesterday so the 2 would have better ventilation. I run the risk of having my resident scrub jay get the eggs but that is better than losing a hen to the heat. I have also in the past put a frozen water bottle inside the next box with a broody. I am going to the store today to look for some smaller fans to hang in my outside brooders.

Thanks Debi. A frozen waterbottle is a good idea. I also give frozen watermelon on really hot days, I didn't yesterday though. I managed to make it to the FedEx store, Walmart, and my vet without having anyone see me cry...Although I didn't bother showering so my hair looks disgusting. I honestly couldn't care less right now.
I knew the second that I saw her that she had passed. Her head was not up, it was tucked under her body. When I moved her I saw that her eyes were open and sunk in, and she smelled bad.
I want to send her in for necropsy today. FedEx says that they cannot ship human or animal carcasses, they had asked what I'm shipping. I'm dropping it off at a different FedEx location, if they ask me what I'm shipping what should I tell them?

I always prepare myself to say lab samples or lab materials or lab specimen or something like that. I have never had them ask, though. Anyone else have a better answer for that question?

Tell them what works.

The place that told you that they do not ship carcasses was wrong but it is common for that to happen at Fedex stores.

Does the Guide talk about what to tell them?

"Lab materials" is a good idea. I don't think the thread says what to tell them. Hopefully they just won't ask. :)

Do I need to overnight the bird? If not, what shipping speed should I choose? I'm shipping her this afternoon.

No, you do not need to over night ship but it might be a good idea given how hot it is today.
