Oh yeah, I forgot I gave you some Barnie eggs. Did you hatch her when you hatched the Amelias?

Sadly, I just sold her mom along with all my Double Laced Blue Barnevelders. I am cutting way back on the number of birds and breeds. I also sold my Bresse flock. Sad to see them go, but I really want to be able to put more energy into the ones I am keeping.

Yes, I hatched both of the Barnie eggs--one boy and one girl. The boy went to the egg farm in Winters and may have been eaten last spring.

I bet he has the blue egg shell gene too.

I know I am trying to do that too but it is so hard to give some up. I have a trio of Bielefelders now that are just chicks from 2 different breeders. I picked the cockerel up in Williams Sunday. Those eggs came from somewhere else & were hatched out by @Spirit Wood farm/Robin Davis. I hatched out the 2 pullets from Oregon eggs. 8 eggs, 2 hatched both pullets. I have the Pita Pintas from Debi @PetRock & if any hatch the CLBs from Rebecca @CackleJoy . Some bodies have to go........LOL. I choose the Brown Leghorns. I am NOT going to show them anyway. The breeder is in Paso Robles & does well at the shows. I really just wanted a few white eggs. My BBS Orps leave tomorrow. The whole pen of them. Now if I could talk my son out of one of his breeds I would be even again.......LOL

Your birds mom was OE (Americana X BCM) and her dad was a Double Laced Blue Barnie. The hen was bred by Santa Cruz mountain chickens. She was a great hen. When bred to my DLBB rooster, the babies hatched out Blue, Black, Splash or Double Laced Blue. You never knew what you were going to get. I have regrets selling that girl. She was really a nice bird, but I have so many "pets" I just cannot keep em all.

It is hard to decide who stays and who goes. The barnies are awesome, but Trisha (TLS Ranch) does such a great job with them I would rather send people to her. I did not feel like I was doing the breed justice.

I am really still learning what it takes to breed good birds so I think I am better off focusing on just a couple of breeds. I am also reducing the number of birds per breed.

At the Cream Legbar event in May, Walt helped me pick my best 3 Cream Legbar hens and best rooster. I am going to take each hen and put her in her own pen and give the rooster conjugal visitation rights and then keep track of which hens produces the best chicks. It will be fun and hopefully rewarding to try to improve my lines.

I am planning to do the same process with my other birds/ breeds but need to make room first.

I did have a weak moment this week tho, and somehow won an auction for silkies. Urg... I lost my 5 year old Silkie hen last week and was surprised by how upset I was. I decided the best way to feel better was to hatch chicks.

So I talked to the lady I bought the eggs from and she said that she has a mix of colors in her Marans pen, so it definitely looks like it's a blue Marans!

With the Ova 190 I had my best results with 53% & that was with the BCMs

53% at lockdown? What was incubation at? Curious what everyone uses

So after yesterday's terrible heat : 4 Marans hens laid really small eggs.
Like when a pullet has been layin for 3-4 weeks. Haven't weighed them.
Anyone heard of that before? Heard of them stopping laying.

Yeah but the standard in the US is to be feathered down the shank and the outside toe. If I remember correctly, it's just the outside. I'd have to go pull the standard and look. I have a copy tucked into my APA standard, but I've stopped showing my marans.
