Amazing!

She looks like a good Mom too.

@PetRock

I hatched out three Pita Pintas today and one of them is white with black spots! The other two are the normal yellow.

Have you had some hatch out white?

I will band that one to see what it looks like later.

I had one white one hatch too.

Those are THE most adorable chicks!! Pita Pentas? Salt and Pepper is soo perfect!!
I can never keep up with the thread - I want to reply to so many things, but by the time I read thru to the end, things have already been replied to and the topics speed along. Not that I'm complaining, just explaining what feels like lurking! ;-)
You are not alone Coleen. That happens to all of us. I just hit the multi as I go & delete whatever isn't needed at the end when I post. There is nothing wrong with just lurking & learning. That's what I did for a long time before I actively participated.

@InWrongCentury
I've been putting my 2 on the roost bar since this is the first week in the coop. It is a little higher than six inches but I have a board roost too, that is at 6" and within jumping distance of the roost bar. Maybe it is too high, so I'm looking forward to hearing what others think, too.
My EE figured it out after being shown once, but my LB is still confused, he isn't the brightest. The only time he agrees to "up" now, is at night so I will put him on the roost. He didn't want the lower, easier board option that I put in because I read somewhere that chicken feet aren't designed to clutch a stick all night. Does anyone have opinions about that? What kind of roost do you have?
I would try putting them on the roost one night when they go in and see what happens. Or put a couple on and see if the others follow suit. I guess that would only work if they are cool with being picked up and placed.
I use 2 by 2s that my husband shaves the corners off of which leaves them with 8 smaller sides instead of 4 sharp corners. They are well used even though I have read afterwards that it is better to use bigger roosts. I used to actually use tree limbs from out in the garden.

Sorry that I'm late answering back! Yesterday we had a baby shower for oldest DD's first baby. I was too exhausted last night to do anything on the computer! I have had them hatch out yellow and white. I've marked the different colored ones but can tell no difference by the time they are a few weeks old. I was hoping that one color or the other would end up being more white but that isn't what is happening. I also had one PP hatch with a big brown spot on his head. I'm watching that one to see how he feathers out.

Okay so a weird thing happened today. long sgory short mama hen kicked aba egg and when i opened it the yolk look like it boiled but the whites were still liquid it had also putrified so it was like grey green. any idea what happen?

I think that you need a Pita Pinta or 2 or 3! I have quite a few from 5 weeks to 10 weeks old!

Pita Pinta pullets are so quiet too.

Perfect for town. A co worker has one EO marraduna Basque hen and two Pita Pinta hens. He says the Basque is much louder. He lives somewhere in East Davis.

I predict that you will have some Pita Pintas.

@ronott1 Those chicks are too cute!

@BCollie You have a lovely site! As usual, your photographs are amazing. I have a lot of respect for people that foster dogs on a regular basis - I have worked with training dogs and horses over the years, and each one is their own situation, requiring a unique set of skills and approach. It's definitely a labor of love!

I feel very accomplished today - I installed the nipple waterer in the run, affixed eyes and chains to the locking carabiners for the coop's latches, and actually worked on a part of the yard that wasn't related to the chickens for the first time in 6 weeks! Woo!

...And then I found a step stool that I could fit through the door of the run and sat and watched chicken tv...

Oh, a question for the group: the girls go back in the coop at sun down without me prodding, but they all pile up in a corner on the floor to sleep still. They have a roost about 6" high, but don't seem to use it for sleeping. Do I need to do anything or will they migrate to it on their own?
Sounds like a very productive day! The best part is that part where you just watch the chicken. I have an old pvc lawn chair in my pen for the same purpose....but sometimes they poop on it...

I had one of those old wooden curtain rods that had grooves running the length of it and cut that into sections. It is about 2" across and they have been using it for the last 2 years and seem fine with it. I don;t really have room in the coop for any bigger ones.

I think everyone here will be infected with the Pita Pinta bug

So, I'm freaking out at little- was expecting chicks to start pipping Late Tuesday or early Wednesday, but two have decided to pip within the last hour! I'm glad I took out the turner a day ahead of locking them down so I could have a little more insurance against the two turning toward/pipping through the wax. I am worried that the exposed membrane on the pips looks awfully dry already.

My poor little Olive Egger is so lonely. She's all alone in the brooder. She should be fine for 2 weeks until the chicks in the bator hatch, right? She's more skittish now that she's alone but she's not loudly cheeping or anything like that.
