2 chicks!

It was so hard resisting helping the chick who started to zip through wax, and then the first chick pushed free and rolled his egg over so the pip was down against the incubator floor. That poor little chick can't catch a break.

One all yellow, one yellow with a teeny tiny black spot on his back. Two more pips, and the last egg looks like there is a shadow/movement in the air sac when I try to candle through the side of the bator it's up against, but I can't see well enough to say for certain it is internally pipped.

How many more this morning.

Is anyone having any processing seminars soon? I have a few young ones, won't be ready for a couple months . Then I'll have a gazilion to process in about 4 months .
I heard that skinning is even easier.
We are having a processing day at the farm in Brentwood on July 12. Anyone interested in learning is welcome to come and help. If you have a few cockerels that are ready to process, you could bring them along. If you would like to go home with a processed bird, there would be a small fee for the class. PM me if you are interested in joining us.

Edited to add that our friends have a big automatic plucker so all we have to do is clean up a few missed feathers after their spin around. Also, a big plus for me is that their 18 year old son usually does all the killing. The last time we processed, my DH skinned one of the chickens because it had beautiful feathers that another friend wanted for projects. It was harder than he thought it was going to be and I don't think that he will volunteer to do that again!

Question...what color is this chick going to be? Any ideas? I figured it would just be black but it's getting white on it's shoulders.
Its a Marans/EE cross.

My guess would be something along these lines. A pretty typical EE pattern.

I set bail at $5 and that gives them a one way trip to the freezer..............The Green Mile!

Haven't been on in a looong time but doing great with my chickens over all.
I have a proposition for a fellow hatcher though! For the last 5 months or so I've had terrible hatch rates-sometimes zero! These are from my own silkie pens. The eggs develop but then are too weak to hatch &die around day 18.
I have over a dozen white and blue/splash silkie eggs I want someone else to try hatching to see if you get a different result! You are welcome to keep or sell the chicks or I could pick them up (if any hatch) but mainly I want to figure out why they aren't hatching for me.
I'm in Rio Linda near Natomas. Please let me know if anyone can help me solve this hatching mystery. Thanks, Darla
