California - Northern

I wish there was a way to tag all of you for helping me with this non-hatching issue! A big THANK YOU to each one for the advice on vitamin deficiency related problems.
I'm on my way to the feed store.

Deb, I hope you will pick up these eggs. It can't hurt to try to hatch them. I've gotten lucky with a couple here and there. And I have been turning them.
Ron, I can have some more for you later this week. My husband stops at that Costco on his way home from work sometimes. We'll figure something out.
I think I need to oxine my bators and focus on the parents for a few weeks.

I sent you a PM. Right now my Brinsea 380 cabinet is running with ONE call duck egg in it.

DH collected some duck eggs the other day and I told him they didn't look fresh to me. I candled them, one clear, one bad and one had a bouncing duckling instead. I'm not sure how far along so I popped it into the incubator with Jason's eggs. Jason's eggs are currently in the hatcher so the one little egg is all on it's own. Some poor duck hen is wondering what happened to her clutch she had hidden.

I'm planning to put in a tray of my own, I'll just wait and do them tomorrow with the silkie eggs.

My daughter wants a duck in the worst way. Cant have one (yet) but every time we see ducklings we have to hear about it for 2-3 days.

Where are you?  We are doing some next week and you are welcome to join us.

I looked and it looks like 2 hours away.
I will be wanting some of your coveted CL in the future so we can always plan it around processing times.
I just don't thinkni can learn it once so whoever is doing it, I'd like to join :)

It is likely a vitamin deficiency. It can happen when they free range--some plants will remove vitamins from them, I think Spinach will lower calcium levels.

Follow the advice from Deann about the vitamins. The big change is not using Calf Manna. That Supplement has Vitamins in it!

I have to get calf manna!!

CAn you put oxine and vitamins together in water?
If not, what about acv?
I'm
Figuring not, but wanted to ask

What does Vit. Def look like?

It really depends on the vitamin that is deficient. The biggest issue I have seen in chicks is a vitamin B12 deficiency. B12 causes weak bones and feet. If you have a chick that hatches with curly feet it could have been caused by too much humidity, but more likely than not it is caused by a lack of vit. B12.

Lack of other vitamins causes star gazing, paralysis, blindness. The list goes on.

The good news. Chicks improve within hours when given vitamins. If your chicks hatch with issues, then you need to up the vitamin in your breeders since it starts there.

I have to run out the door but look forward to continuing this conversation later. I find it fascinating.
Agree. And Vitamin E deficiency will cause wry neck.

I tried Calf Manna as a supplement in feed some years ago. I noticed adult chickens refraining from it. Nutritional yeast flakes/powder like Kal brand has an excellent supply of B vitamins and numerous amino acids. 1 tablespoon of wheat germ oil fortified with A,D,E mixed with 1 lb of feed helps the yeast adhere to feed. Birds like the taste. I do that once a week. A good vitamin-electrolyte-probiotic powder in waterers 2-3 days a week makes a difference too. I don't experience bone problems in adult birds or instances of stargazing with chicks. I refuse to use cheap feed and always will.
