California - Northern

Oh my! Please don't mind me laughing at their cuteness! They are very distinct chicks!
I have never seen a breed like that. Where did you get them?
I don't mind at all - they always make me smile.

These I hatched from eggs from @chiqita in San Jose.
They hatched April 13 (give or take a day).
Here's a pix of the same one on 4/15:

It (he) stole my heart from the beginning.
This is the one I will try a rooster collar on so MAYBE I can keep the little booger.

My Pet chicken sells Rooster Collars now too. They come in different sizes so get a small for him.

Yes, when the feathers start growing out. One to two weeks old usually. Confirmed when they are older but almost always correct.
I didn't know about Iggie & the feather sexing! Cool.
I'll have to look through my photos & check it out.
I have one other suspect roo - a gorgeous splash silkie. I'll look closer at the wing feathers.
I need some more current photos.

On another note, I've 2 broody banties (a birchen modern game & a white OEGB) that got tired of being broody & adopted the UofA blues about a week after their surrogate mom (a Langshan) "weaned" them. Hen mayhem...

They look so nice!

I bet you can't wait to get some blue eggs from them.

Yes! All 3 colors are so pretty in their own way.
I need to get some better pictures - I love some gender guesses.
They are really wild & hate to be held but have figured out that most times I have meal worms or canned corn.

Bad news- one of my Blue Orpington pullets has managed to get hurt very badly. Most the skin on her neck and throat has been torn away. I'm not sure if something managed to reach into the pen and grab her or what... it didn't look like chicken-inflicted wounds I've seen, but I suppose it is possible. She is in treatment for the wound and shock, but I don't know if she's got much of a chance. If she is still very shock-y by morning I may just cull her. I don't want her to suffer for nothing.

More cheerful news- I put a dozen eggs under my stubborn broody on the evening of the eighth. While I was outside she hopped up for a drink so I quickly candled the eggs. It wasn't dark enough to see very well and I just had my crappy keychain flashlight on me, but I could still see veins in seven eggs! If I get a chance after day 7 I'll check again, or by day ten I'll be mean and make her give me a chance to toss any non-starters. It was hard to see in the brown shells with the lighting the way it was.

I am beyond delighted that finally I have German New Hampshire chicks, and wanted to share my joy with you : ) All the chicks, and birds shown are the progeny of: "Walt Leonard-fowlman01" birds.

They are very cute!

Congratulations!

The Pita Pintas are starting to hatch now. One is out and I have 5 with pips and one zipping!

Two of the OEs are out with one more pipped out of 4.

Partridge Penes are at two out. The last ones could be zips.

Sadly none of my chickens are related to iggy and his extraordinary gene.

All.were.lost in the great fox attack. Now that I know more aboit chickens genetics I am completly flabbergasted by iggys offspring. He passed the hook gene onto 97% or so of his male offspring. And almost never to his female chicks. But how is that possible when his gene have nothing to do with sex? Its a mystery.

I still miss him Josephine and ester. Theu were my first showgirls.
