California - Northern

I've got my fingers crossed for you.  I bought 4 day old BCM and a week later 7 of the 15 I'd set hatched.  I think I may have 2 maybe 3 pullets.

It has been a banner cockerel year all around.

I forget which species but increasing one of the hormones (progesterone?) at a certain time tends to produce more females. It may have been chickens, it may have been cattle, it may have been almost anything but crocodiles/alligators.

Sure has! 7 out of 9 chicks this spring were cockerels; and the group I just hatched all 5 of the autosexing breeds were boys, will have to wait and see what the other 5 grow up to be.

My oldest DD was just complaining that we did not have enough cockerels to eat!.

Go figure.

I sold three mixed CMxBA 11 week old cockerels this morning at the animal swap. I wish my kids would stop naming them.... They looked delicious, but someone else is going to find out..

Twenty weeks would be good too. I do not name them unless they are going to be used for breeding.

Maybe I could invest in a crate of earplugs and pass them out to all my neighbors! Somehow I still don't think it would work. We have one Serama rooster and 3 little cockerels, 2 of which have started crowing, so I am pushing neighborly goodwill as it is.

The Ameraucana sisters are doing great! The buffX has gotten very friendly and is a family favorite. They are both still good layers, while most of my older hatchery girls have really fallen off production.

Hope you are well,
Lynda

Chicken Math strikes again! Since I only had 1 BCM hatch I went to pick up 6 more from a local breeder; so of course I came home with 15 mostly blue and splash coppers. If this doesn't yield a few pullets I'm going to have to give up on copper Marans.
Oh, where they from NorCal Chickens? I've got a bunch of black coppers ffrom her. I've been trying SO hard not to get the blues she's been advertising. Her black coppers are turning out so handsome! I've gone up to buy from her twice and both times ended up with more than I intended.

I can't believe how hard it is to get rid of a rooster. I am in livermore and have a beautiful Ameraucana Roo that needs a good home. I have becomes attached to him because he is the friendliest as well as the most beautiful of the lot. If anyone out there in the general vicinity of the east bay who would want a nice Roo please let me know.

Thanks for posting your rooster pics! I can appreciate the downsizing trend...I have a few breeds of hens without roosters because, well, because I have plenty of other roosters but never enough hens. Consequently I don't necessarily know what the roosters look like, for example I had no idea my Wheaten Ameraucana hen matches up to such a dark roo. And your Golden Cuckoo Marans looks so much like a Crele Penedesenca or a Crested Cream Legbar with too much gold. Hope you find the homes they need!
