The liquid is best to spray down coops and cracks and roosting bars, keep the chickens out until it dries (about 30 mins) mites generally come out at night to eat, so you may not see any on the birds at you would the lice. Also, if there are eggs on the base of the feathers, under beak and below ears etc....I generally just pluck those--as the dust won't necessarily kill the eggs, this is why retreatment in 7 days is important, it's the life cycle of the eggs.

I looked online, Googled "chicken lice" and "chicken mites" and they look like lice, they aren't round-ish like mites. They're skinny looking like the lice are. I'd send a picture taken with my macro lens but I already sprayed down the coop with water so they've probably all drowned :)
Where can I get Sevin Liquid Spray?
EDIT: I have Permethrin, will that work to use in the coop instead of the Sevin Liquid Spray? It's the poultry dust, it says Permethrin on it

Go by where you found them. Mites live off of the chickens in the coop and go to the chickens at night. Lice live on the chickens.

A little help....CCLs...only two have big obvious white spots on the head and are lighter in color. The others have a tiny white spot and are darker...what do you think as far as sex?
The CL chick in the bottom of the pic is definitely a boy.
The smaller chick at the top of the photo could be a girl, as some people have been seeing a small white spot along with the distinctive chipmunk racing stripes and eyeliner.
However it is recommended to not use pullets who had indistinct down markings (ie a questionable head spot) for breeding.
Another view would be helpful.

I would say that the first order of business would be to identify the parasitical critters with which you are confronted. It's easy. Mites have eight legs and lice have six. Then you must learn whether or not you have biting lice or sucking lice, if indeed it is mites you are engaging. Each type requires a different treatment. Then read the instructions on your canister to see if its chemistry is appropriate to your problem. There are most likely instructions for application and use. Plus, you are in luck since almost every sector of these United States has a county agricultural agent who is familiar with such problems and thus can give you explicit instructions as to what steps to take and what to use. I find that they are much more cooperative if you show up at the office rather than operate over the phone. Take him a few captured specimens in a sealed vial for his diagnosis and follow up instructions. Then let us know how your problem turns out. Clue: Must parasites are on the bird, if at all, during the day or they are in crevices in the building. At night many go foraging about. Furthermore, you can apprehend your wee monsters by laying a piece of white cloth on the affected area after dark and some will soon be seen crawling about on that contrasting surface to be seen just before dawn. A piece of old bed sheet will do. Isn't having chickens a rollicking bit of fun?

Neal, the Zoologist

My Silkie girl loves cooked chicken skin! So that's something.

I "styled" her crest and tied it up with a ribbon so she could see. She gobbled it down so fast! I'm really hoping she makes it; she replaced our old blue Silkie hen who was the family favorite.

Backyard mutt... Neighbors broody abandoned. About 2 weeks

I think girl and I think she'll be pretty. Any guesses about her cross?????

Thank you everyone...I just went and bought Sevin spray, sprayed down pretty much the entire coop(since it was built of pallets there's crevices everywhere) and now I'm going to dust the birds....How do I dust them? I'm using the Prozap Garden & Poultry Dust...how much do I use for each bird? All the bottle says is 1lb per 100 birds.
