She is not familiar with nipple watering but she should catch on fast with her friend showing her how! I'm so glad that you like her!

She seems to know about meal worms though and Faile did not. The heat today is getting up there. I threw some ice bottles out for her and put up more shade across the front of their coop. (The sun tracking has changed some)

Ill put some more water out for her in a bit. I like to give them more standing water during the heat so they dont have to work as hard to get their fill.

Ill give her some cantaloupe too she should like that.

And that my friends is a lot of duck!

They weigh between 12-15 lbs dressed. Im soaking the lives in milk. Not sure about what to do with the heads and neck.. confit or just render down the fat?

Any recipe for hearts? And gizzards? Didn't get the gonads back!

What about toung? Is it worth it? Or did that go out of fashion with the romans?

We only did about 7 ducks as we realised it was all our freezer was likely to handle!

As it is we did 10 roosters as well so it should be quieter around here.

Saba was fast and did a good job happy I found them. But finishing them for the freezer took a while im exausted now.

So that weird sound we thought was crowing from one of the following....

...hasn't been heard again. We heard it twice about 4 days ago and haven't heard it since. I thought it was crowing, but now I'm not so sure. You'd think the sound would just get more frequent if it was crowing, not happen twice in one day and that's it.
At 5 months old you'd think they'd be crowing or laying by now but nope, nada...

In other news, I have tendinitis in my wrist. I have to wear a wrist brace which makes Sign Language very difficult.

Hi Chickee,

I visited the ABC Website you suggested in addition to a few others. I am a researcher by trade and by heart. I never had done too much research on Ameraucana's but did know there was a difference from an Auracana and a generic term for a Heinz 57 which has the blue egg gene called an Easter Egger. What I found were not only several pictures of purebred Ameraucana roos but the ones that my boy looks like has a name and they are called "Splash Ameraucana", apparently not as common but still purebred. Thank you, for calling out on this. It encouraged me to do some research. That's always a good thing.

LOL!!!!!   Umm...yes..   I meant Ducks.... :P

I've heard messy stories. I'm thinking of just keeping them long enough to process and put in the freezer. Long term projects are not few over here, so the goal is short term :)

Nice work! How did you end up fitting them in bags?
And just 11 more ducks to go , lol! Good thing you didn't do 18 today.
You said "smoking the lives in milk" and immediately I pictured live birds smoking in milk haha

If you thought you heard a crow, most likely you did. All 3 look too similar to me, so can't help you there. And some birds take longer to lay. The jubilee orps are said to start at 7-8 months for instance. I'm wondering if the shorter days are affecting new layers. I've had pullets start at 4 1/2-5 months in the spring. Now I have 5 1/2 month olds that should be laying. The cream legbars started and I think the UofA blues from Ron are thinkin about it. I'm sure in the next couple of weeks they'll start for sure So don't look at the age too much. I doubt they're running late

Agreed!

You notice I do not have any Ameraucanas and I will not.

Stay away from that thread, it is vicious.
