California - Northern

Looks like I'm going to have to go hunt down local people with roosters... Or maybe following up a the feed store to see if the lady got ahold of any of the other egg sellers... That golf ball is nice and toasty, though! The only way Frieda could get down over it any tighter is if she were boneless.

It sucks being in paycheck limbo (first paycheck of the school year isn't until the end of the month)--even without a vehicle developing a major problem. I was up in Cave Junction the last few days, and on my way home, the truck developed a major oil leak somewhere. Put 4 quarts of oil in, and half an hour later, there was no oil pressure again, and nothing showing on the dip stick. My husband is also out of town, on a ministry trip, so he doesn't know yet. He was caravanning with another couple we know, down to Santa Rosa (so, so tempted to try to arrange an egg pick up--if he hadn't've been going with someone else, I would've!), and is probably back on the road right now, since he was asked to preach up at Smith River about 12 hours from now.

Necropsy up here run around $120 without shipping fees. No local vets to take them to either.

OSUCorvallis has a diagnostic lab right next to their vet hospital. Here's their price sheet http://vetmed.oregonstate.edu/diagnostic/tests
Necropsy, Small Ag Animal (poultry, farmed fish, etc.) - up to 3 (plus disposal $5) $35.00
I'm sure there would be additional fees but it might be worth calling them, especially if things don't look up. Of course it is the weekend. Figures :(

I don't know, but now I'm curious. I think the red would be considered leakage. Is this the guy in your beautiful avatar? What breed is he?

Hi There,
What kind of bird is this? Unusual coloring, so wondering about the breed and where you got him? Not a splash I've ever seen, unless he is the wrong color with major leakage, nor Mille Fleur nor Calico.
Dawn

He's about 20 weeks, very sweet/calm bird. My daughter saw him at a swap, fell for him and paid 2 bucks. He was, guessing, about 5 week old.

I like his markings (I think the red is leakage) and want to use him over some Legbar hens that I'll cull from pure breeding pen and over some Ameraucanas that I planned on using to create some colorful olive and easter eggers.

Hoping someone could give me the beat on his color so I'd have an idea what he might pass on. Maybe use the calculator (genetics and color... still trying to wrap my head around)

He does kinda of look like the avatar doesn't he...

OR4-Hmom : I would definitely suspect the moldy scratch. Poisons (like rat poison) can also have the same symptoms. A hard lesson to learn on making sure you are feeding good food!

Congratulations to Kim (@capayvalleychick
)!  Walt posted on another thread that she won at the Heirloom Expo.

Congratulations on the win!!!! :clap

Thanks so much and thanks to everyone who gave me congrats!  I was very surprised. Kelly, I hope to see you at some shows this coming year!
@tommysgirl
those Dorkings belong to Michele Villalovos. They won Best English and several other classes, in this show and the fair.

I hope to be at Stockton. We've had a crazy year in our family, and it hasn't left any time for going to poultry events. I'm still weeding through my birds to see if I have anything suitable for showing.

X2 On suspecting the moldy scratch.

Hasn't the Stockton show been moved from its location from the fair, to somewhere else in Stockton this year?
Are there other good poultry events coming up before then in CA?

Just curious, how do you show a chicken in Stockton? Or, how do you show Marans eggs?

Your daughter has good taste. He is beautiful. Have fun with the calculator. I have lost many hours playing with that thing. but I think it is really geared towards pure bred birds. It predicted that my NH over my OE would produce red barred boys and solid red girls and I got a bunch of orange chicks...The single pullet indistinguishable except by comb. It might work for you though, I hope so.

I think breeding cool looking EEs is a fun thing. Keep us posted on the results.

Thanks to all for the ideas on the ailing birds.

I haven't heard this morning how they are doing. Shortly after joining this thread there was a moldy food issue so when in doubt I toss. I have a plastic tote with 3 flock blocks waiting for room in the trash can after they got wet.

I'!! have to call OSU again for their fees, when I called them last year they quoted me $120. That
was for a physical exam and disposal. Any tests needed were extra.

It is supposed to be moved to the Modesto JC this year. In early January, late Dec ask about the showing. The premium book will be out out by then and I could help you enter if you want to show. It is easy to do. Attached see the Calif show schedule.

List of shows

Thank you, Walt. You are very kind.

Will look over the list, and contact you if we decide to try this year.

Didn't you recently speak at the Heirloom Expo at the SR fairgrounds this year? We only heard about that show after the fact. We were kicking ourselves for missing it.

Just wish there were more nice poultry events located in No. Ca...
