My mom is picking up my Lakenvelder eggs in Oroville today!! I'm so excited. Trying to get ahold of Jeff to see when I can pick up my Lavender Orpington eggs, but haven't heard back yet. Hopefully today or tomorrow!! I want to get those eggs set!

She offered me all 30 of her eggs for just the price of the 8 I originally wanted, but I turned her down simply because I don't think I'd be able to sell all those chicks. And my brooder isn't big enough! I did say I'd take a few extras though so she's giving me 12 for $8. Very nice lady!
NIce you are getting what you want. And also nice that you are incorporating family into helping in your endeavors

Well my hatch these eggs after giving wormer experiment was a flop. Had about a 20% hatch rate. A lot got so thick I thought they had chicks and they did not. Others stopped with a 1/2 formed chick. Only the breese hatched well. Only got 1 marans chick! 3 silkies made it but could not externally pip so I opened holes for them now to see if they make the first week.

In contrast my muscovy duck hatch will either be 90 or 100% of the started eggs. I took the chicks as they hatched so no one was crushed this time. One more egg and she can have them back. I am going to hand raise a few as keepers I miss pickard who died a few months ago. Need more 20 lb trying to sit in my lap and nibble me.

We are eating muscovy tonight. We took the breast off the bone and are trying it sous vide.

Each 1/2 weighted about 550 g. Thats a lot of meat!
That's interesting about worming then hatching eggs. I wondered about Corid and the same thing. I'm ecstatic that you had a great duck hatch. Cause I took some from you

Finally found a friend that has a rooster, and therefore eggs I can stick under Frieda! 1 rooster to 12 hens, so there's a pretty good chance the eggs are fertile, right? And she says most the eggs she opens are fertile. No idea what color eggs/what kind of chickens, but since I realized that Frieda's been sitting almost 2 weeks already, I figured I should stop being so picky (especially for free eggs!)

Given that Frieda doesn't quite fill a 1 foot by 1 foot nest box when fully pancaked out (she's a bantam/gamebird/who-knows-what cross), about how many eggs should I get when I go over to pick them up?
I can't resist giving broodies their babies. My hen has gone broody 3 times in less than a year. I wasn't going to give her babies, but how can you not?? She just loves them

Oh great! Evacuation area is less than 4 miles away. Most of the roads under order go back further into the canyons but still not a great feeling.

At least as poultry superintendent I have someplace to take the birds, if needed.
Stay safe, you'll be in our thoughts and prayers for sure. We need rain!

I have never had a problem bringing something home from any shows and I show all over the US. At Modesto I will be one of three people checking that there are no sick birds at the show. It is a personal decision though.

Is the Modesto show big? I missed it last time, and it's so close to me. Probably 20 minutes. So I'd like to check it out next time.

What kind of evidence should I be looking for to determine if by birds have worms?

I've heard that people generally treat their birds for worms regularly anyway so I need to determine how and when should I treat my flock.

Should I treat the 13 week olds at the same time I treat the rest. 4 of my 8 birds are laying after treating what is the waiting period before being able to eat the eggs?

Here are charts that if you scroll all the way to the right will give you how long most drugs used on poultry are detected in yolk (Y), albumin (A) or whole egg (WE) as well as the usual withdrawal time depending on form and dose used. http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/j.1365-2885.2011.01287.x/full

Format takes some getting used to, but once you get it, info is easy to understand.

Do people here ever band together for bulk purchases? It's a pretty common thing among the local planted tank aquarium crowd, which is why I bring it up. Bulk mealworms are $19 a lb, but if you buy 44 lbs, they come down to $7.50. Seems like a no brainer to do a group purchase and then have a meet-up to distribute them.

What is your take on disease exposure? I'm concerned about that, in fact, it has held be me back from entering any shows. I really do want to learn how to evaluate my own chickens!
Walt really reassured me at the Stockton show about disease exposure at large shows like this one. He said he doesn't even quarantine when he brings his birds home. (and he had a lot of birds there) I'm looking forward to drooling over his birds again. And laughing at those call ducks! So loud for such a teeny tiny duck!

Thanks that is way more info that I was prepared to assimilate. Anyone have a more condensed answer for me? I do appreciate the info though.

ROFL- but without knowing which dewormer, form and dosage you get the too much information answer ;)

Use valbazen and do not eat the eggs for 6 days after each dose(worm them again after 7 to 10 days so two treatments)
