California - Northern

I'm in the Modesto area. I am new to chickens this year. I have them just as pets and for eggs. I'd love to go to the Modesto show, it's open to the public right? I have no plans on showing my birds.

Good news: I set 23 eggs today. 15 Golden Lakenvelders and 8 Lavender Orpingtons.

Bad news: My ex girlfriend lives in Weed. Her house is burned down, one of her rescue's dogs is missing and several cats did not make it out of the house.
Yeah for the eggs, but so sad about the fire. There has bee a lot of dvastation up there. Some folks on one of the local buys/sell/trade FB groups is collecting clothing and toiletries that will be taken up there tomorrow. I donated a bag of toothbrushes, toothpaste, soap, etc.
I'm also happy that it's not mandatory, but something should be done with places like the feed stores near me that *knowingly* buy/sell/trade sick and diseased birds.

Kathy, I totally agree with you! It is my understanding that NPIP was designed for diseases prevalent in the day. Much of what the birds are tested for is not really applicable. The feed store issue is an ethical issue and government mandated programs won't change that. Customers and local people who vote with their money will impact those ethical issues. I push hard for people to stop buying hatchery birds from feed stores. It's just too hard to resist a baby fluff!

Was in a feed store the other day and so disgusted. Charging $30 per sad looking SMALL GLW pullet about 12 weeks old. And people try to chew me down from $25 on my POL gals who are fat, sleek and healthy. My .02 is that feed stores should stick with feed and leave the animals to people who have the room to let them grow on the ground.
The ones I have been in here seem to so pretty well with them. I think most sell the chicks so you will come back and buy feed for them for the next 5+ years.

I am heartbroken for my ex girlfriend and her family right now. This is what remains of their home.

They had about one minute to evacuate with as many of their animals as they could get. They run an animal rescue and were not able to get every animal out alive. Two dogs and several cats are missing. They are in DESPERATE need of foster homes for dogs/cats. All dogs are cats are friendly with other dogs/cats. They lost everything, they did not even have time to grab clothes.
If you can help in any way - fostering an animal, donating money, clothes, etc. please do. You can find information including their cell phone number, PayPal email address, and the address where they're living on these pages:

I'm donating 4 pairs of pants, a pair of boots, 4 shirts, and whatever else I can find. I'm also going to foster a cat for them. If you can help at all it would be greatly appreciated...they've dedicated their lives to saving animals and now they've lost everything.
How awful! I suspect there will be lots of donations headed that way soon.

I predict a very good hatch.

Concord Feed only does chicks spring through early summer they sell hatchery chicks and only have them less than a week. They seem to do a good job with the ones they do they buy from Privet hatchery. Ive been happy with the place so far and my birds seem to be doing well.
Our Grants Pass Grange sells the most chicks in the Grange chain for the entire state of Oregon. The chicks come from Ideal and for the most part are healthy. Every once in a while a few get trampled is shipping and they get whole shipments that suffer from cold in transit in February. I see a few with pasty butt but they are really good about cleaning them up and making sure the problem is corrected before returning them to the group. I wish we had better options but most people are just looking for egg producers.

IMO. NPIP is a way for the commercial industry to discourage back yard poultry breeders. Even though the commercial people are the ones who start these chicken plagues. We suffer with our flocks being euthanized because of their mistakes. I am very happy that NPIP is not mandatory in California.

so sad. I am in shock of what has happened to the town of weed today

We have not had nearly the devastation as Weed has today. My heart goes out to them.

Our fire here is a beast in its own right with 3 main fronts as of this am 11600 acres and I saw the smoke this AM it is much bigger now.
I took A pic from Sly Park Dam Sunday afternoon and again this afternoon. It is much closer now you can see smoke billowing up to the North maybe 2 miles as a crow flies. the fire is North of Hwy 50 spreading

Is it moving your way? Any evacuations in place?
