East Bay here!! Love my girls and have to say they're pretty spoiled. They come when they're called (especially if I have a red bag of 'wormies"!! The reds love to jump in my lap. They live a pretty spoiled life but that's OK.....they're my girls!!

The Texas A&M quail are funny. When you first go to the pen, they're as jumpy and excitable as the others, but after a few seconds they're all "to heck with that, that's hard work" and plop back down. @Audio51 and the others who raise them, how would I sex them to try to keep a pair? Are they visually sexable by pattern/color like other cots, or do I have to try the vent puffy-ness/foam sexing methods when they're mature? I definitely want to keep a pair or trio of the brown around, and will probably be tempted to keep more.

I heard back from the breeder, he said he did have heavy losses from one brooder batch and asked me to let him know what the necropsy said. He also offered to replace them, but we're going to be up in Sacramento doing neurology stuff with my daughter the next two days so I can't take him up on that right away.

Tell me I am not the only one who gets really, really nervous leaving the birds to be taken care of by someone else? I know my little brothers will come over and take care of them, but I hate it anyway.

Welcome! Reds are great birds (especially with a little spoiling). What other kinds do you have?

Great group of people here! We'd love to see picture of your girls!

Weird - not quoting right - But no you're not the only one; last time I was out of town I worried the whole time! I had even made a 5 gallon water bucket and PVC feeders that would hold way more than they would need for the few days, had a friend come over to check on them and Still worried...guess it's just in my genes.

Nope. I hate leaving ANY of my animals to be looked after by others (dog, fish, you have it). Pretty much the ONLY people I trust are my sister and my BFF. Luckily, they both bought houses within 4 blocks of me so I have trustworthy backup at hand.

Quail are funny birds as a whole. The A&Ms do seem to be a bit calmer for me too. Unfortunately the only other way to sex them beside vernt sexing is to wait for a crow or an egg.

And no...you are not the only who worries about entrusting the chickens to others. I am usually only gone over night and not even that very often. I usually just keep them in the secure part of the pen and make sure they have plenty of food and water, but the last time it was too hot to keep them confines to that pen. It has polycarbonate panels over the top and gets about 5-10 degrees warmer in there. I had to just give them the run of that and the outer pen and was worried the entire time that something was going to get them during the night. Thank goodness everyone was fine when we got home...

Gives me an ache in me heart hearing the names of theses places of incomparable beauty going up in flames. The fact that they're in the path to my home throws the angora fire back in my face . Terrifying. Praying for all close to these fires. The smoke has filled north shore but we have not begun choking on the smoke here on the south shore yet...
