Me, too. I knew I should have driven up to get them.

glad your chicks are ok!

For future refrence animals are not gurenteed next day on express. Mmyour best bet is to do hold for pick up and have the po call you so you are not stuck waiting.

It seems like it sucks but it is for the animals safety. I hate seeing people sure there is something wrong when they have been bumped for dry ice and are likely fine. Jeffs a pretty good shipper and knows his po!

Shipping sticker says 1-day. Tracking said delivery by 3PM. They sat in Sac for 24 hours. No excuse for that IMO, and no excuse for a three hour trip taking two days (and nothing to do w/Jeff). And yes, we had a hold. Which the po didn't honor. The only reason I got to pick them up is because my actual mail lady called when she saw them waiting for her.

I double checked on the po website and live chickens from Jeff's zip to mine are guaranteed 1-day with express.

Well, I already know I will never do this again. I can't take multiple days off work bc the post office can't move a box a short distance in a timely manner.

So in case any of you have been wondering...Remember how I had set 23 eggs and was having a difficult hatch? The total for those 23 eggs...FOUR chicks. That's it. This was the worst hatch I have ever had. 17% hatch rate. I am so sad. :( I got 3 Lavender Orpingtons out of the 8 eggs from Jeff, and ONE out of 15 Golden Lakenvelder eggs. Words can't describe how much I am hoping this little Golden Lakenvelder turns out to be a girl. As you guys probably recall, I searched EVERYWHERE for them before I finally found a single person that has the eggs. I got the last eggs from before she sold the flock. I wish it was the Lavender Orps that had only 1 chick, and the Golden Lakenvelders that had more hatch...at least with the Lavenders I can buy more from Jeff, but my source of Golden Lakenvelders is gone since she sold the flock. I am desperately hoping this little Lakenvelder chick turns out to be a girl...I will be so depressed if it turns out to be a boy, I was sooo excited about having found these eggs.

I did not do eggtopsy on the eggs, I let them go for several days past hatch day, and finally threw them away. I was way too sad about the bad hatch, I don't think I could handle opening up eggs and seeing a bunch of dead chicks. It probably would have helped figure out why they didn't hatch, but I just couldn't do it.

By the way...Jeff(Papa's Poultry) saw that I was having a really bad hatch and said that his Lavender Orps were having low fertility from the week that I was given eggs...so he's giving me more Lavender Orps chicks. Whenever someone asks where they can get hatching eggs or chicks, I always point them to Jeff. He's awesome!!
Jeff is great to get eggs from and I will definitley do it again. Only problem is I REALLY want some Blue LRW pullets and I keep getting Black laced. I am thinking that maybe chicks is a better way to go. The one that is old enough to tell is definitley a cockerel. Fingers crossed the other will turn out to be a pullet. I sure hope your Lakenvelder is one too!

The site won't upload a pic from my phone, but they're here! My mail carrier called when she got into work so I ran over and grabbed them. All but one seem fine. Smallest one had a nasty case of pasty butt and may have spraddle leg as well. Poor thing. I cleaned her off and popped her under the EcoGlow. Will check up on her in a bit when she's had a chance to calm down. The others are mostly running around acting like chickens. And man, one has a LOUD peep.
YEAH!!!!

Quote: I see them hopping up on the Broody hen too but have never thought to pay attention to whether they turn out to be cockerels or not. I will definitley start doing so now!

Little pasty butt didn't make it (RIP), but the others are frisky and eating and drinking. Jeff sent 2 extras (thanks!) so even with the loss of the littlest one, I still have 11 (3 black, 3 blue, 5 splash).

I also scored a pumpkin box today, so when they out grow the wardrobe box, I can upgrade their digs without having to condo boxes together.
Awww.....so sorry that one didn't make it but the others are gorgeous! You are very lucky!

Quote: Too much calcium can cause hypercalcemia in roosters. They can develop calcification of the soft tissues, such as the keideys and heart. Othere porblesm they can get include pancreatitis, egg binding, dry skin, appetite loss, lethargy, confusion, depression, slowed growth in pullets and cockerels, dehydration, diarrhea or constipation, and even death. They may not have problems until they are a couple of years old and the excess had built up in the system.

Quote: No...the roosters will not consume the oystershell. If the calcium is in the feed though, they will have no choice.

Thank you for the answer @Audio51 I will for sure check the label on the fish meal bag!
You're welcome!

How frustrating!   I am sure they will be fine if they get to you by tomorrow, having to wait and worry AND take more time off work is really the pits

Thank you. I was directing it to chickengirl1304. Sorry, I'm still trying to figure this page out. Its kinda funky from my phone. :/

Welcome to the  group.  Who were you directing this post to?

I love the blue laced wyandottes! Those are some pretty birds you have there

congrats!

The hens are so much prettier than the roosters, too. That doesn't happen too often.

Sorry you lost one. Glad everyone else is doing well. I'll bet the black ones turn out beautiful.

I've read enough of other people's posts to know a loss or two is normal. And yeah, I have a lot of seating and several dog beds scattered about. The pups take up a lot of space, but they're so worth it.

This is my guy up at the cabin last week:

What a beautiful dog! I love mastiffs.
