Well, the largest chick has launched itself out of the brooder (or to the top edge). The EcoGlow offers a perfect perch for that. Time to put a lid on it, LOL!

OK Pita Pinta People...I ADORE my little girl. She is as sweet and friendly as she can be. She is also goofy and because she has been on the low end of the PO she seems more comfortable hanging out solo or with me.. I did a pen shuffle this weekend and it seems to suit her better. She is in with my Dorkings, My California Grey, My EE and a few other low key ladies but I have to ask you..are they dingier than the avg bell?

Her original coop has no ladder. It is only 18 inches off the ground and it has only taken a short time for EVERY OTHER BIRD starting at about 3 weeks to fly up into it. It's not a problem as soon as she saw me making night rounds she would come get under my feet until I picked her up and put her in but she hatched 7/4 and never got the hang of flying into the coop

Now she is in a different pen and the coop has a ladder. Last night was her first night in there and we were taking bets on if Daphne would be on the floor of the pen or in the coop at bed time. She was a snuggled down...on the ground next to the ladder. We cracked up. Not sure if she has negative associations of being cooped with more assertive birds, if she doesn't understand the ladder concept or if she just has developed the habit of being put to bed.

Any thoughts??

She is waiting for you to put her up on the roost...

The two that went to live in Davis went up the ladder fine in the evening but would not go down in the morning. They are going down now but it took a while for them to be comfortable with the process.

One of the hens I breed from will go into a pet carrier at night and hunker down there sometimes. I have to get her out and move her into the coop at night. The roost board is about 18 inches off of the ground so they jump up to it. All of my roosts are low enough that they can get up on them without ladders. Big large fowl like pita pintas should not have high roods.

I think you have spoiled her by putting her in each night. She expects to be put in now and is unwilling to do it on her own....

Vicki, she looks terrible every time it rains. Like, absolutely awful. Most of my chickens just look like wet birds after the rain, but she looks just downright pathetic. She insists on sleeping underneath a bush outside of the coop, a habit I'm going to have to break her of this winter, and so she gets drenched when it rains. Wish I had a picture. Her crest goes every which way and takes forever to dry!

I can imagine! Silly chicken...doesn't know to atay out of the rain!

So, what you are telling me is that she is wise.

She knows what makes her comfortable and what she isn't used to so she is taking her time getiing used to. The roosts in both coops where she has lived are only three or four inches off the floor of the hen house. All three hen houses/coops are rectangles on legs so once they are in there they just have a little hop up. I will keep picking her up and putting her in. Gives me the chance for a snuggle.

I think that is part of it...she likes me
