Hi...I have another genetics question. I am interested in trying out Houdan. I went on the BYC Houdan thread and learned that since the hatcheries are the major (if not only) source of the breed, Houdan in the USA are not bred to type. I have been looking and found one guy in AZ who sells hatching eggs and other people who have ebay auctions but those look like the hatchery houdan not the ones in the old pics of what they are supposed to look like. Too much white, too erect, too slight etc.

Yellow House Farm said that to bring them back to what they are supposed to be what they need is a White Dorking outcross. (YHF breeds beautiful white Dorkings) My question is while the White Dorking would help with the body type and shape wouldn't the Black Dorking be a better bet if you are trying to darken the breed? I didn't want to ask there b/c I didn't want to get the F1. F2 aleals lecture that makes my eyes glaze and my brain freeze so I brought my question to you all. You can talk genetics to me but really what I want is a yes or no...unless it is too complicated for that in which case I will do my best to give you my attention, but I can't make any promises...thanks peeps!

totaly guessing here, but im gonna go with them expecting it to be the recessive white in dorkings, thus easier to breed out. Totally a guess however.

Thank you for your answer and please forgive my density but wouldn't it be easier to just go with the black than to try to breed out the white in later generations?

Hi all, it's been a while!

Yesterday I found my 7yr old Jersey Giant hen had fly strike on her bum. I instantly got a clean cage, and some medical supplies ready. I soaked her in Epsom salt water, which flushed many maggots out. I then soaked her in water with Betadine (surgical soap). After not seeing anymore maggots, I clipped the feathers surrounding the wound and vent. I then globbed honey on the medium-sized (compared to other pictures of fly strike sites I've seen) hole underneath the vent. It didn't smell after the Betadine, and it doesn't smell today, thank goodness. She has an appetite for her regular pellets, and she is drinking. Also, she does not lay.

Do you guys have any suggestions or additions I should continue doing to help her heal? I was also wondering if any of you have had this problem?

if your white is ressessive you will get useable color crosses immediatly and i think be able to possibly get mottling back by f2. Assuming its just a color thing white needs 2 genes to express and is often liked for that. Assuming this is a ressessive white. Black is a whole nother color you are workjng with white just masks color.

Thanks for the explanation. I am going to try hatching some Houdan this year. (By which I mean I am going to I have no illusions about quality but if I like them I may decide to work with them at some point.
