California - Northern

Just wondering of anyone is going to the show in Modesto at the end of January? I'm going and would like to buy a couple Salmon Faverolles pullets. I currently don't have chickens but would like to start with these, and maybe some orpingtons. Don't have to be show quality but if they were my son would be showing them at Stanislaus county fair for Ceres 4h. Thanks.

I don't know of any Salmon Faverolles breeders, but there were a few there last year. I will be there. I sent in my paperwork to show some of my Welsummers and Barnevelders. This will be my first time showing my birds.

I have 3 black orps & 1 chocolate orp - all pullets. Incubator hatched by me on 08/30/14. Asking $40 each. They are from Papa's Poultry (Jeff McCormick) in Redding). If someone would like them, I could justify to my hubby that I need to go. But it's not like I'm not going anyway... :) chocolate & blacks black pullet
are the chocolates bantam? Or LF?

Modesto milling Rocks. Love their feed.

Is anyone else having problems with Mareks?

I have lost several in the last few months to the same symptoms. I sent the last one for necropsy and the result was confirmed as Marek's.
What are folks doing to keep their hens warm?
We have been below freezing a lot in the last weeks here in the Eastern Foothills (Paradise) and I have not needed to do anything to keep mine warm other than ensure they had a dry coop at night and a place to get out of the rain an wind during the day. I keep Marans, Wyandottes, Ameraucanas and also have a Showgirl and a Bresse. All have done fine.
Hello, everyone! Hope you all had awesome holidays! Here's my Christmas morning family photo
Great picture!

My NyD Hatch!

6 BBS Australorps(Blue)

And 15 Trader Joes chicks!

That is quite an assortment of colors for the TJ's chicks. The Rock Island ones I hatched were all from brown eggs and where Austra White-types. Any idea what these will look like when grown?

I have returned to the 21st Century! I don't think I mentioned it, but I woke up to a flooded kitchen Christmas morning and I've been without running water in my kitchen ever since (my plumber was out of town, I didn't want to deal with a stranger, and then my BFF's sister said she'd come fix it, but kept getting delayed). So Carrie finally made it over yesterday and had everything fixed in under 15 minutes.

I also no longer have chickens in my house! This is a major event after the past three months of fighting with the custom coop bozo who never did deliver anything. The Chicken Gardener gys showed up with a coop on Sunday and had it fully installed in about an hour. I'm certain I'll make some alterations down the road (adding more ventilation and external next boxes), but I'm just SOOOOOO happy my chooks are now scratching in the dirt.

First night I had to put them up into the house by hand. Second night they had the idea, but no the execution, LOL! The first one up the ramp planted herself in the doorway and all the others lined up on the ramp and just settled in. Made it easy to put them away. Hopefully tonight they'll go the whole distance.

Happy to report that my dog has almost no interest in them. He sniffed, they eyeballed him, then he went and took a nap. Sadly, his sister who spends most of her days with us is VERY EXCITED BY THEM!!! She spent all day whining and shaking. So she's staying home the rest of the week and we'll work on getting her to chill out this weekend.

Beautiful coop! And it looks study. I bet the girls were very happy to be on the dirt as well! I think outside nest boxes would be a great addition too.

Quote: I have a couple of Marans that have continued to lay a few times a week an my blue Wyandotte that is such a good broody and picked back up laying. I am getting about 5-6 a week from her, ut I haven't had a blue egg in weeks. Most of my pullets are Ameraucanas, but one of the mottled ones has taken on cockerel characteristics. No crowing yet but definitely pointed saddle and hackle feathers. I have a home for him though in the next week or so. I also picked up 5 Splash English Orphington pullets about 4-6 months old from NorCal Farms today. They are all big beautiful girls but 3 have slate shanks and 2 have willow shanks. Since I am not breeding them it didn't matter to me and I got them for a good price (all 5 for $65). I am very happy with them! These are pictures of some of them.

The chicks in the picture are australorps and TJ's chicks. The chick on the far right is a Splash Australorp. I also have 4 blue australorps and 1 that is black. They are BBS Genetics.

The yellow chicks in the middle are the TJ's chicks. The chicks look like California Whites--The hens were likely White Leghorns and they would use California Gray Roosters. If so, the eggs will be white and the chickens will look like White Leghorns with no spots as adults but bigger.

The other option is that they are Austra Whites. Those are white with black spots as adults. I think they are California whites because the spots are a light color compared to the spots on the austra white chicks. Austra whites are Australorp rooster and white leghorn hens. The eggs would be mostly white but tinted.

They are very healthy chicks though so some type of hybrid vigor is going on.
