Chooks got their first supervised semi-free ranging today (inside an Omlet fence). There were weeds to be eaten, and there was much rejoicing.

I bet! I have let mine out in the yard a few times in the last week or so. They are not happy when I don't now. DH doesn't want me to let them out at all so I have to do it on days he is at work....

Well, it looks as if my hen is ready to permanently rejoin her flock tomorrow! She has been eyeing the outside of her box for the last day or two, and keeps up very well with her flock when she goes outside. I'm so incredibly happy that she recovered so quickly!

Lately though, I've been wondering about something. It probably sounds absurd, as she may have just injured something, but I would really like to know, or at least hear your thoughts on it. Judging by the fact that the killed hen did not have a head, and was completely untouched elsewhere, I thought raccoon. But is there some type of animal that injures their prey so that they can come back the next day, or a few days after and get an easy meal?

Probably not, just thought I'd ask.

After about an hour, they're all back in the run, snuggled up and chilling out. Will be nice to be able to let them out when I get home from work each night.

Amazing color & body shape on those RIRs.
And your PartiPenes are so much bigger/rounder than my pullet. What was their hatch date? Mine was July 2014.

Ooo! Where'd you get that black beauty? <wink> <wink>
Great coop. Glad they are all doing well. Your mottled pullet is growing so fast!
Love my 2 new additions as well.
The splash I've named Willow & the blue I've named Storm are now hanging with the rest of the big orps but they keep trying to get in with the juvie mottled & columbian.
Silly girls.

Very silly girls! Phoebe is finally eating from the main dishes, though she's still not eating with the others. They don't chase her away. She just doesn't shove in. She did for sprouted BOSS today, which is a good sign.
