California - Northern

Just got back from getting birds from @capayvalleychick for a novice like me even her culls are beautiful. The 2 Del's I got laid eggs on the way home and didn't hear a peep out of them the whole 5 hour ride. (Made the grand tour Guinda to Santa Rosa and home through Fairfield)

Her setup there is wonderful and her birds are great. I know her culls have defects for SOP but her Silver Grey Dorking girls are so pretty. Im so jealous of the setup and space there.

Also saw @TheKeeper and her amazing mixed flock, Her little ones are so adorable. The little Serama I was holding was so cute. I could easily have a hundred like her.

Sorry I couldnt connect with Ron would have loved to see how he does it in his space.

It was great that we could finally connect. I'm glad you enjoyed my crazy flock.
Bantams are what started me on chickens. They all have such character - bossy with the big girls, so talkative, & love to be held or perch on your shoulder.
Beware - Susan MacLean from LA is coming to Modesto with a bunch rescued from the animal shelter to find new forever homes. Her booth is called "Second Hand Seramas".

Your 2 new additions are so pretty. And already laying! Nice.

Hi tommysgirl - I agree that Amers are a kooky spooky jumpy wary alert breed that always seem like they spend the day running to-and-fro but I wouldn't trade my APA Ameraucana for the world. She is so gentle and non-combative toward the Silkies that are half her size. She avoids conflicts and chest-bumping and flock politics in general. She chases stray cats out of the yard and sometimes the Mourning Doves and Sparrows if they come too close to the treats dish. Although it may not be her favorite thing when we hold her, she will relax and coo to us. Her pastel XL blue eggs are just a bonus!

I must agree that the U of A Blues seem to have a bluer tint to their eggs alongside Amer blue eggs so that is a plus -- however I won't trade a sweet non-combative bird like an Amer for any other blue egg breed because I don't think any of the others would integrate as well in our gentle breeds flock. Amers -- and some EEs as well -- seem to have a penchant for nurturning and accept injured or orphaned chicks into the flock where other breeds usually are not so willing.

I had a cockerel with twisted feet and spraddle legs. while I was treating him in the brooder I put a barrier between him and the other chicks and one EE pullet kept jumping over and hanging out with him. It made me nervous at first but she just wanted to be his buddy. It was really sweet!

I am glad you have such a mellow group. My silkies...the sisters of Our Lady of Perpetual Broodiness...are sweet but don't take any nonsense from the larger girls. I feel fortunate that I don't have much of a problem with bullying either. My Chocolate Barred Rock does like to make sure that the newest/youngest don't get into the coop until after everyone else has their roosting spot but we have never had any real problems

Thanks! Now you know for sure that they are laying.

Is anyone interested in a warming plate style brooder? I got from Premier1 Farm Supplies. It's just like the Brinsea EcoGlow for 50 chicks, 16" x 24" with a dome cover so the chickies don't sit on top of it.
It's brand new in the box - never been used.
It's too dang big for my brooder & the amount of chicks i'll ever have at one time.
I had dreams bigger then my realities. I'm going to get the smaller one.
I'd be happy to find a useful home for what i paid for it: $102, rather than return it.
I can meet you at the PPBA show in Modesto next Sat.
PM me for any questions or if you'd like it.
Thanks.

I want it but need to save my cash for other things. Want to trade for a used Genesis incubator? Or chickens?

Dang. You're very nice to offer but I have 2 other foam incubators, just not digital. I am SO spoiled by my Brinsea.
Your chickens are awesome & gorgeous but I need to sell all the babies/teenagers I have (20 of them!).
Thank you again.

If anyone is interested, I am going to order the smaller warming plate & cover (12" x 12"). If I buy 2, then the shipping is free because it's over $100 (otherwise it's $13)
Does anyone want to go in with me? I'll front the money & you can pay me when I get it to you. If I order Monday, I'll get it this week & can bring it to Modesto.
They are $62.00 (plate & cover) - no tax. They only use 22 watts/hr (as opposed to heat lamps at 100/150/250 watts/hr). The big plate is 66 watts/hr.
Way safer than bulbs & helps chickies feel safe, like hiding under momma hen.
