oh my god they are all so cute!! I especially love the first one!

Is the New Hampshire rooster yours, too? The photo didn't do him justice at all.

I really should've said hi... I saw you over by the Ko Shamos and then later by the sale cages, but you were talking to people both times, and I'm not great at starting conversations anyway... If you saw me, I was the one in the pink and purple tie-dye, cuddling the Orloff while my husband got the box from the van ;-)
I too, stopped in during lunch brake, I was helping in running the Backcountry Horse Clinic that was going on 300 yards further down from the show. I did get to talk to Debi about her Marans and I believe her name is Bridget, about her Standard Hamburgs. They are like the Dalmatians of the chicken world, so lovely. I was called back today cause I won the beautiful chicken egg basket with extra goodies inside off the raffle table. Simply grand looking birds there. Rochelle

My Marans flock contains my Dominiques. They did not allow this behavior to develop. Marans may be bossy and lazy, but nobody tells Dominiques what to do.

Oh m god I definitely agree!! my Dominique is very independent and even lays in her own nest that she made on the edge of the woods in our backyard haha!! my FBCM is a psycho these past 2 months and has pushed Ji (the Dominique) to the bottom of the pecking order. But quite honestly I dont think she mines! She is a veery good forager and is so calm she barely ever talks.
sweet!! thank you! I think my family has picked the bb red as one of our top contenders for our spring picks! so cute!!

Yes, Marans need to be in a somewhat equally matched temperament flock. White Leghorns are no shrinking violets either and put our Cuckoo Marans in her place when she viciously challenged. Unfortunately the gentles were not as self-defending as the Leg -- 2-lb Silkies may think they're tough but are not an equal match to a 7-lb Marans so the Marans was re-homed. We loved our Dom pullet but lost her as a juvie to a seizure. We are up to 5 gentle breeds for the year and don't plan any more any time soon. Brown eggs in our basket will have a long wait. We'll just settle for the pink tinted ones from the Silkies for now!

Why, yes, as a matter of fact, I do have an extra black orp. She's 10 months old, also from Papa's Poultry. I got hatching eggs - most ended up cuckoo. She JUST started laying.

This is her next to a blue orp that I got from @HighStreetCoop. She's $40.
She's pretty!
From both. Marans are big and are not known to be the best at egg laying. From a production point of view they have poor feed to egg conversion but not terrible like some breeds. Just to compare, and like Lual said the eggs are beautiful, just less of them for more money: Notice that the Marans hen average is 6.5 pounds and the egg laying amount show three egg per week. The Penedesenca has a hne that weighs 4 pounds, 2.5 pounds less yet the average is 4 eggs per hen each week.
although I love my Marans and would never part with them, I adore Ron's oe's and Arkansas blues. Mine were hen raised (by a Marans who also raises ducks :) ),they are a little flighty. But would be much better If I raised them myself. Speaking of which: I think I may need to be on a wait list for eggs from Ron. Those things are the best layers of pretty eggs! *edited to add: they started laying in October and were some of my most reliable layers all winter. Them and the Bresse lay extremely well for me.

So my non chickeny husband actually knows the names of the breeds I have.
He mentioned the orpingtons, so I asked "do you know what other breeds I have?"
He named them off "Bresse, black copper Marans, blue copper Marans, and legbars (cream)"
He actually DOES listen when I'm rambling on about chickens ;)

I noticed the last few posts were about the Marans. I had a few marans but slowly i gave them away and was left with just one blue copper maran (she was a personal fav). then the other morning i went out and she was laying dead under the roost. she had roosted up the night before and she was older. so i think she just had a heart attack or something. but i would like to get a few more. I live down near Merced in the central valley. Does anyone know who in the area breeds blue copper marans or blue wyandottes? I love the blue color.

Hi! it is good to hear from you.

There are Marans down your way--I do not know about Blue though. I hope someone has some for you.
