I was wondering if anyone can identify what kind of a chick this is? Only one and she is female. Got in a batch of dark pullets. 4 dark and this blond!!

2 scrub jays found my ducks nests. I rescued them before damage was done and replaced with fake eggs.
Those birds are brutal!

Yep! They are the predator I had the most problems with last year. The dang birds even pecked open a few eggs just days before they were due to hatch last year. One chick was dead when I noticed, the other was very dicey but ended up making it. Big egg thieves and I have no doubt they'd kill chicks if they got the chance.

If you see eggs that look like this:



It is probably the work of Jays. They got one of my chicks last spring too and either a cat or a Jay made off with one of my bantam chicks.

speaking of my bantam chicks

I picked up a few assorted feather legged bantams to give to a broody since I didn't have eggs for her to hatch. They were 3 weeks old when I took these pics. I think they are cochin but I don't know for sure. Any thoughts?

Also if you can name colors and guess at sex that would be fun. I have a mottled one and it is clearly a cockerel already. Think chick 1 is a pullet on account of her feathers being so far along and she has a tale. I would think 3 and 4 were boys but no real combs yet. I know it is early.

Very cute! The fast feathering/tail for pullets seems to work often for me in guessing, but I wouldn't put money on it. I will leave the guesses on the rest for others.

Aww....I am so glad she found her sea legs.... She is a cutie!
