Incubation question for all you pros.....

While using the octagon twenty (I suppose also any other bator)

When the temperature naturally rises from development do you unscrew the temperate gauge compartment and adjust or do you leave it at the original calibration?

I do not adjust them.

You must have the eco model? my 40 has a digital display on top for adjusting temperature.

The temperature can be lower during the last three days.--down to 97.5 is fine. Some sources say that the chicks hatch better. It would help keep oxygen levels up--oxygen goes down as temperature and humidity goes up.

ok. Also my oxygen is lower already at this elevation. I'm leaving the spot check in and watching it go from 99 to 101 by day 18 then 98 at lockdown... wondering if I should tamper vs leave and hope for the best.

I would keep it at 98 for lockdown. It does help with oxygen and might be very good for your elevation at Tahoe.

I have a small farm in sonoma county and will be uploading pictures of what we have going on chicken wise soon!

I was pawing through the thread but did not see, does anyone have any isbar hatching eggs for sale around here? Thanks so much!
Welcome! Hope you find the eggs you are looking for.

First hatched babies of the season: Pita Pintas, Bantam Cochins and Blue Sumatras. I'm in love. .

Adorable!!! I need me some Pita Pintas!

Deann, hysterical video on "cow drinks from hose". Too cute!
I got my first two small Premier plates today! Counting down... Tuesday March 17th, St Patrick's Day Hatch!
Chick names anyone?
Guiness
Blarney
Shamrock
Waterford
Leprechaun
????
How about "Corned Beef" and "Cabbage"?

I would like to share photos of my brand new joys of life: chicks : ) I would like to thank "DIDolan" for the beautiful eggs from her lovely hens, and delightful experience. When we first started to communicate, Dawn sent me some photos of her Blue, and Splash Marans eggs where the color was dark and quite impressive, but, they were much impressive and prettier in person. The eggs had 100% fertility, and the hatch started very early hours of the 21st.day, and was completed within 15 hrs. To my surprise, the first chick took only 3 hours from pip to hatch. Well, looked like all the chicks were in a big hurry to get out of their eggs. So nice to have fuzzy little chicks to love, and play with rather than doing my work...

More adorable babies!!!!!

I am going to order a Brinsea Mini Advance on Friday

I am feeling the need to be able to check fertility with my NH and my Bantam pens and I haven't had sufficient broody cooperation. I have one girl right now and if tradition holds she will shortly be joined by her broody partner but I am holding them off with golf balls waiting for my Urch Houdan chicks.

Plus you people are always so generous when you ship eggs, you send me more than a girl can handle so I need a spot for the overflow...7 egg capacity is perfect.

Just thought I would share that news...knew hardly anyone else would get it!
I think I need another bator too. I have my Brinsea Octagon 20 Adv full of duck and goose eggs, my Farm Innovator full of CCL, OE, Bresse, Delaware, Buckeye, Silkie and a few others, and my Hovabator is full of quail eggs. I just set up by ancient Hovabator to hatch in. I went down to a friends to puck up some hatchling CCL pullet and she sent me home with a dozen assorted hatching eggs. Then I me hoe to find another friend had left bout 30 eggs on my front porch to hatch......
I finally have 3 pips on my muscovy duck eggs! Yay!
Go peepers!
YEAH!!!!

Hmm... If I show Frieda all these chick pics*, do you think she'd go broody, already? ;-)

*I think it's safe to say that this is the only site that I'd discuss chick pics at :laugh

I wish that would work....I would be showing pictures to my Blue Wyandotte. So far she has not shown any signs of broodiness yet this season.

OMG - these duck are taking forever to zip.
All day & there's only 1 that's 1/3 zipped.
I keep whistling at the incubator to cheer them on.
Somebody please yell at me to sit on my hands.
