My husband is going to start having " hypothetical cows". I'm up to over 100 Barnevelder chicks.

29 on the way to the brooder this morning. ( more still in the incubator).

I have always admired your beautiful birds.
Love their body shape & amazing feather pattern.
How dare you be so tempting with those cute chicks! :)
Are you selling any now?

I'm kinda freaking out.I was just informed that a commercial poultry ranch in my town has avian flu =( I live right behind a great big one, what can I do to protect my birds, They're directly downwind of it =(

Also get shoes you only wear in your own outside/coops and get a bleack spray for your reg shoes and hands.

Happy to hear your CL program is in the growth stage. Must feel good to be at the point of being able to focus on the finer points. I know how much work it take sto get to that point.

Sadly, my mom's dog got into my "pet" flock's pen" and killed 17 chickens including Buddy, my bantam barred rock rooster. I have not posted anything about the attack until now because it has been too hard to talk about. Even now, I am shaking.

I heard the screams and ran to the coop to find a sea of dead (17) and injured (5) chickens The dog was still in the pen and ran up to me with a huge proud grin on her face as if saying, "look what I did".

It took all my willpower not to kill the dog. Frankly, I think I was in too much shock to do much. Sadly I lost Buddy and his two Barred Rock girlfriends plus several other birds that were dear to me.
So sorry to hear this.

My first zebra dove of 2015 hatched yesterday! Yay!
Congrats, they're beautiful!

I had a little mini-disaster. My Faverolles cock seriously injured one of his legs. From a little below his knee to about the top of his foot was degloved on the back of his leg, exposing the tendon. It looks like someone took a straight razor and just sliced skin, feathers and flesh off. The worst part is I cannot figure out how it happened. I can't find anything he could have wrapped around his leg or got his leg caught in and pulled, it doesn't look like an injury from a hen or any predator injury I have ever seen, I have scoured his run and their roosts for anything sharp and found nothing. I am so afraid I am missing something and his ladies will get hurt at well.

For those of you with mountain lion pressure, is there anything to do? I've got one we and the neighbors all heard while we were (each respectively) walking our dogs on our adjacent properties; about 9pm. Jeesh. The upper coop I can't see, and it is all hardware cloth & plywood except the 15 x 24ft run is topped with chicken wire. Dog is kenneled tonight. I just read yesterday that several young males have been spotted in Sonoma County, presumably looking for territory. Weird timing...

Mountain lions aren't that common up here but we do see them from time to time. Bears are a more common occurrence.

Fish &Wildlife has suggested 2 runs of hot wire as a deterent. Make sure to secure your fencing/hardware cloth with more than staples, they can be pulled out easily by bears and cats.

I hope the bachelors find slim picking and more on quickly.

Flowers may have more helpful suggestions also.
