California - Northern

I must be twisted...it sounds like fun. Maybe Jules & I can participate some time. I have seen you post about it before. I just told some people yesterday that it seems I am busier than ever & I finally figures out why. I have slowed down so much as I get older that it takes me twice as long to get anything done......LOL Thank God for Aaron. He is my saving Grace when it comes to physical work around here. He is working hard at our experimental garden this year & we are both excited.
That would be fun! We always welcome helping hands! Neal and Chris joined us yesterday. It was nice to hear some new stories from Neal! And Chris helped me choose which 2 Pita Pinta cockerels to keep. Deciding who lives and who dies is always a difficult decision for me when it comes to my pure bred flocks.

What a day, my son's baseball game, processed rabbits, picked up some kids(baby goats) and made some delicious homemade rabbit and dumplings soup, now to relax and check the bator for late hatchers =)

That sounds great. I love rabbit and dumplings. Had that at Cochon in New Orleans my last trip out.

Hi all.  Have recently moved to Oakland, and am looking for people nearby with backyard chickens and extra eggs.  Had my own coop in Los Altos for some years(part of the first Silicon Valley Tour de Coop), but am now retired and not always in town.  Am more than willing to buy feed, help with care when I'm in town, pay, etc to get access to edible eggs!  (I can't stand to even look at the "eggs" they sell in stores anymore)

I don't have any as of yet (hoping they'll be laying soon), but I highly recommend the eggs from Eat Well Farm (they're at most of the farmers markets). They're the best ones I've been able to find.

I know how hard it is making those decisions. When I had a lot of birds I would study the SOP on each breed & go pen to pen & color band them keepers or culls to sell. Now that I have cut back so much it is almost like starting over. This time it will only be a few breeds though. I can do less & less as time passes so it takes forever for the simplest chores. I cannot expect Aaron to everything & he does now have a full time job that he loves working for a tree trimming/removing service.

Thank you for your comment about my AM chicks. Both the AM & Marans chicks are delightful as chicks as well as adults. I am not new to poultry husbandry, and do recognize and am aware of temperament differences between the breeds. In the past, I did purchase Ameraucanas from Chickee, and they have integrated into my flock without any stress, and still living quite happily, which I am sure, and of course hoping that the same will happen with these brand new adorable chicks.

I would not paint any breed with a wide brush as to their temperament; for, I believe would not be fair to the breeders who devote their lives to better the confirmation as well as temperament problems of their breeds. Marans can be assertive, so can many other breeds. The housing, living conditions, and size of their coop or yard can play a big role in the behavior of birds. Well of course that does not mean that I would keep Gamebirds with Chickens. Also, there are some breeds which would not be good idea at all to house with certain other breeds. My Orps., NHs., AMs. and couple of Marans always lived in harmony. Do they ever have readjustment or challenge of hierarchy? yes, of course they do, but, they last a short while, and get back to normal, peaceful life.

These lovely Marans chicks are not the very first ones I have had in my life. My experience with this breed, Marans, has been very positive, and they were all purchased from reputable breeders. Last year my very old Marans passed away; still miss them very much, and wanted to have some more to help their void in my heart. Also, I have never been in a habit of purchasing an animal at a drop of a hat. I always communicate with the breeders at length to make sure of their animals' personalities just as I did with Chickee.

Yes, your Ameraucana on your avatar is very lovely.

just chiming in here to agree that my birchen marans have been the most easy-going of any of my chicken breeds (isbars are also quite calm; the silver campines are more flighty and high-strung). I just sold my spare marans rooster to a family in Oakdale, and he was calm and quiet in the car, even! also recently had to integrate two groups of marans hens, and it went smoothly without a hitch.

and @juststruttin so sorry to read about the loss of your pet chickens! i can only imagine how hard that must be on you...

That's good to hear that Aaron found a job that he likes! Woot!!!

Hope the Red Bluff show goers are having a great time. I just finished digging out my parents front walkway and can't really justify the 1 1/2 hour drive to have to run through the show. I really dislike "Murphy's Law"!

I did! I t was fun and exhausting!. Saw some really interesting breeds and met a lot of nice people. I am sure there were some of you there, but didn't meet anyone I am aware of from here. Came home with three beautiful Seramas for a friend....a gorgeous red rooster and a sizzle rooster an a very sweet little mottled hen (not sure what her color is called). I bought the hen for the friend and the 2 roosters were entered in the show, but the youth wer taking a long time. The lady who owned them was getting out of Seramas and just GAVE them to us for free! Watched the Serama judging and leaned a LOT. The was great for the youth. He explained everything about each bird...what he was looking for and why he scored them the way he did.

Wow! Busy day!

I have had a lot of Marans over the last several years. I have never had a single one that was aggressive at all. I wonder if the ones you had were just from a line with bad temperament.

Great group, Chris!

Welcome to BYC!!! I know we have some members from your area. Someone should be able to set you up with a regular supply of eating eggs.
I have Black Copper Manans and Olive Egger eggs set to hatch next Saturday. I have read these are normally late on hatching. Is this true?
The Marans in my experience do tend to run a little late. I haven't hatched many OE though so can't help you there.

No invite ??? ;)
I've had chicken n dumplings but not rabbit. Sounds delish!!
oh it was so good. =) I had some family over to give me a hand and put some away for next weekend, gonna have a big Easter party =)

Wish I had a plucker lol but I'd also rather process rabbits then birds. But I raise chickens for eggs and water fowl and rabbits for amusement and for food.... and they are all so much fun =) excepting some of my favorites which are just for me to enjoy and propagate =)
